In the February 1970 issue of Super Stock & Drag Illustrated magazine, there was an article on a Boss 302 Maverick. The project was a joint effort between Doug Nash and the Henderson Ford dealership in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A prototype was built and the plan was for Henderson to offer these cars through the dealership at price near $5000.00. I wonder if any others besides the prototype were actually built and sold to the public, and if so, do any still exist? Do any other members have knowledge of these cars?
My father was an engineer for Ford from 1963 to 2005. His Maverick test car received a ‘71 boss 302 prototype engine shortly before being put on the resale lot. Engineer’s had first dibs on the purchase of these cars. I currently own the car but the engine was sold in the mid seventies.
I'm curious, what kind of prototype goodies would have been in this engine since by 1971 Boss's were already in production for two years?
I have some super 8 footage of it at Milan Dragway from 1970 somewhere in storage. Not a lot of photos of it. Was more or less a grocery getter for the family.
There was '71 Boss 302 Mustang(s) built, one survives. Bob Perkins has it and is restoring to orig, including a complete 1971 "assembly line" engine. The Long Lost 1971 Boss 302 Mustang Prototype, Bob Perkins Boss Expert Saving History - YouTube
In 1971 I was working in the parts department of a Baltimore area Ford dealer. We actually were shipped a Boss 302 intake manifold with a D1ZE casting number as well as a stripe kit identical to the Boss 351 kit with BOSS 302 graphics for the front fenders and rear deck lid.
I enlarged the 13th picture tht shows a red concept car with a black Maverick along side of it. The driver's side fender has a "Boss" decal on it. Bruce
