I ran some rubber cooler lines. The keep rubbing on the bar that moves side to side when you turn the wheel (can someone tell me what thats called?). When I put disc on the front I had to make new line going back to the pumpkin. This was easier then I thought. I would assume the process for making cooler lines is the same as brake lines So now my questions.. 1) If I keep the rubber, where/ how do you guys route them? It looks like If I go any higher, im right into the headers/engine for heat. 2) Is there a recommended size and material if I decide to bend some cooler lines? As always, thanks for the help and putting up with my dumb questions.
Just get new steel transmission lines from Right Stuff Detailing. They provide better protection from rupture/wear.
are we sure they have the right ones for a C4 in a 70? They did not have the correct break lines for a my 70. I will look, but it wouldnt be the correct line coming back from my trans cooler anyway, i think.
The center thingy, AKA steering center link, is what you're rubbing on. It's not a big issue that they rub, the bigger issue is the type of rubber lines people use. Most won't handle the heat or the higher pressure that auto trans has. That and just clamping a rubber hose on a smooth steel line will sooner or later push off the line blowing trans fluid everywhere and possibly a fire, (hot exhaust and hot fluid). Steel lines for a Mav/Comet are not easily found but 70, 302 Mustang will work. You may have to tweek them a little. Personally I use the steel line up to the water pump and then braided hose into a external cooler (much better), using AN fittings.
I ran my metal trans cooler lines from the transmission, up and over the shock tower, under the battery tray, and switched over to rubber to make the final turn into the cooler in front of the radiator. By going that route, they do not intrude into any part of the engine bay. Also, because they were not maverick lines to begin with, I felt the freedom to experiment.
I have thought about doing this as well Stu. How did you route the steel lines from the tranny? Do they go out straight to the frame or out and forward and then towards the tower?
I went close to the frame and up and over the shock tower between the shock and fender. I cut and slit short pieces of fuel line to wrap the line with at points of attachment, both lines run about an inch apart, and attached with a piece of sheet metal bent into a M shape and a appropriate self tapping screw. They dont rub anywhere and are never in the way. I never took a pic cuz I always felt like it was low budget hackery.....but I seem to thrive on that sort of thing when I can get away with it.
I have an external cooler w/fan mounted at the rear of the car. to me that's less heat for the radiator to deal with and a whole lot less obstacles to deal with. I have hydraulic lines ran to it, they are made for pressure and heat.
