So I'm using a 98 Explorer 302 but switching it to carb. Can I re-use the distributor or do I need to replace with something designed for carb?

98 Explorer has a cam synchronizer, you will need to replace it with a distributor. Make sure the distributor has the correct cam gear.

    Right here of course.
Remove the cam synchronizer from the Explorer engine and inspect the gear.
Gear on the left is cast iron (rough finish) steel gear on the right (smooth finish)

Buy a distributor with same type of gear as the Explorer or change gear as needed.

If you want a dura spark 2 distributor with the roller cam gear on it get a distributor from a parts house new for a 1985 mustang GT with manual trans.

The automatics had efi and flat tappet cam.

the manual cars had a Holley 4v with roller cam from the factory.

(Double check but I do believe I have my year correct)

You are correct. That is the exact distributor I run.
