Hey, there is two versions of C4, one with large housing and another one with small and yes oil stick goes in different places, so can I use both ?? I have large housing and oil stick to the pan, Racersplace is offering to a C4 with oil stick going to block or to transmission, please help
there are a couple of different c-4's. one has a small bellhousing and the other has a larger bellhousing. the smaller takes a 157 tooth flexplate and the larger is the 164 tooth. i believe the engine plate is different also. and the torque convertor. they all have to match up. also the input shaft before 1970 was a 24 spline and after was a 26 spline. make sure you get the right spline convertor. lastly, go for the case fill tranny, not the pan fill. the pan fill was usually a truck tranny and may get in the way of headers. a good tech source is http://www.mustangcentral.net/tech/c4.html
yes the engine plate is differnt , it will fit trust me , but the bolt holes for the starter wont dont ask how i know
I would use the small bell and matching flexplate. Dipstick can go into the case, on some, and into the tranny pan, on others. Some headers, if used, will not clear the large bellhousing's. Either dip stick location will work, most of the time. Ask your dealer, if both styles they have, use the five disc foward clutch. Some had four disc and five is always better for "More Power" applications. Always, use a new converter too, even in stock rebuilds. Most shops will not warranty the trans unless you do.
i learned my lessons the hard ($$$)way. ask me why i have 2 engine plates, two size bellhousings, 2 different trannys, and 3 torque convertors.
If the C4 that was working in the car had the large bell you need to replace it with the same one. Most (if not all the Mavericks came with a small bell and case fill. If yours was running with the larger one then you need to stay with that housing so your starter, Drive plate, and torque converter will fit. If you change to the small bell then you will need to change those parts too.
The trans with the pan fill is not a C-4, it is a C-5. A bell housing from a C-4 will not interchange with a C-5. C-5s were used in trucks, vans and big bodied cars. They are stronger than a C-4 and almost all of the internals will interchange. Ford made several fo the transmissions that look almost the same. They are as follows (as far as I can remember If there are others let me know) 1. C-3 - looks just like a C-4 but only has 1 band adjusting bolt on the outside. 2. C-4 - 1969 and earlier (cruse-O-matic) 3. C-4 - 1970 and later 4. C-4 - Pinto only (has a different valve body than a regular C-4) All of the above have case fill and the bell housing bolts hold on the front pump 5. C-5 - Has pan fill and the bell housing bolts do not hold the front pump in place. As far as bell housings and torque plates go there were 6 different sizes for a C-4 and 2 different for a C-5. C-4 1. Big block bolt pattern 2. Small block bolt pattern for a 164 tooth flywheel 3. Small block bolt pattern for a 157 tooth bolt pattern 4. small block bolt pattern for a Mustang II only (very small bell housing uses a Mustang II only torque converter and flywheel/flexplate 5. I6 177/200 Bolt pattern 6. I4 2000/2300 Bolt pattern C-5 1. Big block bolt pattern 2. Small block bolt pattern for a 164 tooth flywheel I think that is all. If anyone can think of any others please fell free to interject. Don
After reading this I'm pretty confused...lol. I'm about to swap a 302 in for my 250 six. I know the trans will bolt up but what about flex plate, starter, torque converter? Brad
ok your torque converter prolly wont work, might want to replace it anyways starter yes i dont thing the flex plate will work either i would just replace everything, might as well do it while its out
