I am hoping the drive shaft that was on the original 170/3 speed manual trany will still fit on the 302/C4. Has anyone reused the drive shaft in this way? What am I looking for as far as fitment? As long as it doent fall out of the trany tail I'm fine? Or is there a min depth it has to stay in?

I reused the stock driveshaft from the stock 200/3-speed manual tranny when I installed a 302/4-speed in my 1st Maverick. Much more recently I reused the driveshaft from the stock C4 when I reused the same 4-speed in my current Maverick. Hope this helps.

    1970 6cyl models & '71 302 all used 46 5/8" driveshaft.

Unless that truck C4 is longer than passenger types, DS should fit.

I would have that shaft tested for balance/roundness , esp., if it wasn't in an operating car when removed and know not to have any viberation at highway speeds.

the car ran when the shaft was removed. Where would I even go to have something like that tested?

Driveline, spring shop, some machine shops can do so.

Unless there's something suspect, chances I'd have it checked prior to first drive are zero & none... Just check U joints for possible looseness & be sure they are freely moving. Isn't like major time/work to install or remove is required.
