I know it's common to retrofit an older 302 with a roller cam, but can a flat-tappet cam be used in a '90s 302 roller block? And if so, would a timing set for a '90s block have to be used? What about the fuel pump eccentric? I assume that everything had electric fuel pumps in the '90s.

Yep. My 91 Mustang 5.0 has a flat tappet Lunatti VooDoo cam. Till '92, truck 5.0 had flat tappet cams in roller blocks.

I used the FP eccentric from a '68 289(didn't like the two piece unit in orig 302) and a timing chain set for 289/early 302. Front cover is from orig 302. Fuel inj covers are approx ¼" shallower, will cause misalignment of water pump pulley. Possibly interference with eccentric.

Not true. The front flange mounting the water pump is the same dimension from the block. I'm using a late 80's cover with V belt pulleys. Everything lines up

What's the difference between the pre-72 timing set and the post-'72 set?

I used this one https://www.summitracing.com/parts/slp-kt3-163sa1 with a two piece eccentric, but I have not installed the motor yet. I got it 10 weeks ago but now is out of stock.....says for 1983-2000. Put it on a E7TE motor. Used a timing cover from a '73.

Supposedly the timing marks retarded the cam 4*. I've only seen one that was off from straight up. On a straight up set, the cam dowel and crank key will be perfectly aligned when you install the timing set

You wanna explain why these pulleys do not properly align on front of my old T-Bird 5.0? Picts include '72 water pump & pulleys with orig (blue) & 5.0(black) & balancers, all were misaligned. The black 5.0 balancer is on front of Stang 5.0 now in Comet along with pulleys shown. Only difference was timing cover depth & yes I measured the pair.

Yea, you have the wrong water pump pulley. There were several offsets in waterpump pulleys over the years, ditto for the crank pulleys. It's no more complicated than that.

Not so, ALL those pulleys incl water pump are on my Comet engine. Are orig '72 parts.

Then the balancer's pulley flange had a different offset. Or the water pump was different. You generally cannot mix parts from FEAD's (Front End Accessory Drives) from different models and years. Been through all this enough to know what I'm talking about.

Like I said, THE TIMING COVER WAS SHALLOWER, I measured it. I was going to use some of the timing cover bolts from T-Bird 5.0(junked that engine) because ones in Comet 302 were in poor cond, too short for the '72 cover. Would begin to tighten maybe four threads in.

All those pulleys and black balancer shown are whats on my Comet, using orig '72 timing cover. .

Oh boy....gonna be interesting to see what I run into when I put my motor in and try to install the mish mash I am currently using. I was looking at a different power steering bracket too, Which might wait for the dust to settle first. I measured my junkyard TC cover from a '73 cougar and the E7TE cover and they were the same 2". Water pumps differ by 1/8".......but that pic of pulleys that you posted Tom look like they are off 1/4 to 3/8. Sooooooo.....water pumps, TC covers, and pullies have variance? Brackets must too to make things work? I am a newb, so that is a real question.

I'm gonna look see if I still have that 5.0 cover, engine was originally from a '86 LSC Lincoln. Other than headers, Trick Flow heads/cam & Cobra intake, I believe a friend got all the other remains. Block needed decked/bored and had wiped out thrust bearing, crank had just short of .100 end play. It was junk.

I've got a half dozen 70-up covers. I'll measure them. But I used an 88 cover from a crown Vic and a late 88 aluminum std rotation pump for one, combined with an older 70's balancer and everything lines up with the aftermarket aluminum pulleys I bought off ebay. You're the first person I've heard of that found a thinner cover. Even Ford lists the same timing covers for every std rotation application from 70-91

Looks as if I need to apologize.

I'm not sure if I found the LSC 5.0 cover, but both EFI covers I do have are same depth as original. At a loss to explain why orig 302 pulleys and and harmonic balancer used on '91 5.0 would not line up on a '86 LSC 5.0.

I musta been on some bad s***. Sorry.
