Identifying motor size Is there numbers on a six cylinder that tells you what size it is I have a 68 motor don’t know the size evidently I didn’t come in the car
Maybe somebody else will chime in, but the starter location and the number of water pump bolts will tell you the size.
I have a 68 motor don’t know the size evidently I didn’t come in the car: Ford small block six 170/200/250 can be ID'd: Important engine series numbers are behind high mount starter on 170's and 200's. IE - C8DE or D3DE etc... ALL later 200's have 5 freeze plugs under exhaust manifold - 170's have 3 freeze plugs. All 170's and 200's in '3pedal Mavericks' and late Mustangs use "Toploader" style Bellhouse - Automatics use older bellhouse - 'small pattern' for C4. ALL 250's have the starter below the engine block and use same FW, Clutch , Bellhouse as SBF V8. and as per Classic Inlines pages: Water Pumps: All 144/170/200ci engines used a 3 bolt water pump, while the 250ci six utilized a 4 bolt water pump. This is the easiest way to distinguish a 250ci from the 144/170/200ci six. have fun
Maverick 170 with three freeze plugs was the last of the original small block six design. the 200 and 250 have 7 main bearings, the 170 has 4 mains'. Not to be counted out though, the 4-main six is also last Ford used in 50's/60's Raceboat class that created six cylinder racing research and an Six - aftermarket speed equipment industry.
