Seems to be, it was the only driveshaft I had, I still got an 1" or so of travel.

A friend sold me a 9" from a 70 Mustang for $500, had 31 spline axles, "N" case w/Daytona pinion, and a rebuilt Traction Loc. I added brake parts, 3.89 gears and rebuild kit for a grand total of $800.

I never knew Mustangs came with 31 spline axles.

Have you installed this setup already? How did everything work? I am looking at the same setup, I would like to do 11" disc brakes though. What else have you done to your car? How is the performance after all this was done? Sorry for the million questions lol

I also have the 11 inch brakes. Goofed on the last post. Can't tell how it performs yet. So far I only started the car while still on the stands but plan to put it on the ground sometime in the few days. I bought this setup based on the excellent reviews I heard on this forum. What I can saw is the were great folks to work with.

Yup. My 69 Cobra Jet Mach 1 had them.

You can also do an 8.8 out of an Explorer. Can't beat the price,I got mine for 200. Came with 4.10's(you can get them with any good gear ratio) 31 spline axles, Trac lock and disc brakes.

The 8.8" is strong and more easily obtainable (with a posi) these days. I still favor the 9", however. Like the 8", you have the ability to keep a couple of pigs lying around with different gear ratio's if you intend to take a road trip somewhere and they are easy to swap out. Easier to pull the axles too, as they aren't retained with clips. You also have the option of lightening them up significantly with aluminum carriers and pinion housings if weight is a factor.

The Explorer 8.8" is still a lot stronger than the 8" and provided that you find one that is not rusted to high heaven (tough, in my neck of the woods) you might be able to just rebuild the brakes vs. buying everything new. You will have to decide if you want to retain the offset pinion or shorten one side. Forum members run them in both configurations.

I bought a cleaned up 9" housing from a drag race buddy know and another friend gave me his 9" with the hogs head so I'll use the clean 9" and redo the hogs head. And I got a Detroit locker from a drag race buddy for replacing his fan motor on his condenser unit at his house.

9 in. is the only way to go,& if you have a stick with any power a 8.8 will not hold up especially if using slicks.

What ? There are so many fast slick stick 8.8 cars out there its not funny. I will be hitting my 8.8 with 700hp N/A and 900 ish on the bottle.

Becareful with your pinion angle, make sure its not to much for street but make sure you have enough for racing, its a little tricky when you use your car for both but can be done.
