I believe you can get mechanical versions like the original or updated electronic versions. Anyone have some experience with the electronic ones?

There is a ton of info if you search voltage regulator in the search function at the top of the page.

I bought an electronic one from RockAuto and a Reproduction Autolite one from a Mustang place. I used the Autolite cover and riveted it onto the electronic unit. I have driven the car all summer and put 3000 miles on it without issue.

If your car still isn't running the regulator won't prevent it from starting(assuming a good battery of course)... It's function is to control voltage the alternator produces, hence name "voltage regulator"....

The electronic with a original tall cover is probably best bet... I had a new in box Echlin from '70s someone gave me for my Cobra Jet that I painted cover blue and installed correct decal... After a couple years it all but quit charging, has had the electronic now for probably 15 years and that same one maybe 10 years prior to the Echlin...

No external regulator on my Comet, installed a 2G alt I had on hand when I rewired engine compartment...

I used my space for a aux fuse panel to feed ignition, electric fan, relays for HL circuit, etc...

Using an electronic one from NAPA. No problems.
