My C-4 is starting to slip pretty bad and I am switching the motor out soon and would like to do it all at once. I would like something with an overdrive and a few more gears any suggestions on what transmission I should use?

An aod or 4r70w if you want to stay auto, or a wc t5 if you want a manual. You will need an aftermarket controller if you decide on a 4r70w, unless you get a full manual valve body.

Will the bell housing from my 250 inline six still work with a 302 and the aod?

On the AOD the bell housing is part of the trans case. The 250 uses the same bell pattern as a sbf but has a different imbalance, so if you want to use the AOD with the 250 you'll need a 0 balance 164t flex plate which I'm not sure if one was ever made, maybe one from a 300 i6?

A 302 is a small block ford so it uses the same bell as a 250, but you also have to make sure which flex plate you get depending on what year 302 you get. Early 302's(68-81) use 28oz imbalance, and late 302/5.0'(82-01) use 50oz imbalance.

a zero imbalance flex plate is easy. take any weight flex plate and remove the weights. guess what, you have a zero imbalance flex plate.

Your orig C4 bell is useless with a AOD, those have a non removable bell that uses 164 tooth flexplate, the 4.6 does use a zero balance flexplate... The 1991 4.6(Lincoln Town Car) & half year 1992(Crown Vic & Grand Marquis) will have correct balance but I dunno if a 4.6 flexplate will bolt to a 250 crank... If you're going to 302, 164 tooth, 50 oz flexplates are easy as all AOD/5.0 from '81 up used those...

late 5.0 roller motor....50 oz. flexplate and AOD.
you can get a flex plate for an early 302 that will work with an AOD, I had one on mine...
