Is it possible that my Maverick does not have a star wheel adjustment on the back drum break pads? I dont know what year the rear end is. I think its 74+ as it has a bigger center hole. Im changing the wheel cylinder and dont see one at all.
They have to be in there to hold the shoes in place. But I have seen countless times where for whatever reason, they don't line up exactly with the slot. I have even seen where a DIY'er has installed them backwards and then there is no way they line up with the slot.
Without the star adjuster in place the brake shoes will never make contact with the drums. My Dad had that once in his 1966 Ranchero...with single master cylinder. He didn't realize a brake wasn't adjusting properly. When the adjuster dropped out from between the shoes he was on a hilly, curving road and all at once NO BRAKES!
