Well I have a cool maverick story for yall. I have a close friend who races pure stock on a dirt track at the local raceway. He runs the only ford product (a torino) in his class everything else is the c word. It never fails he runs near the back of the pack. he is a stickler for the rule his car is always 100% legal. I keep telling him most of the cars can't be legal if we always run so bad. he's a good driver the car handles near perfect. This leads me to the maverick part of the story, I have a built 351 stroker sitting in my shop waiting on my drag car to be finished. last friday I got him talked in to getting a little payback. so we bring his race car to my shop and swap his motor for mine. Keepn mind no tunning changes on a motor that has 0 miles just break in time. we load up saturday morning after a long night. notice a large oil spot on the trailor so I crawl under the car to see whats up we somehow hit the oil filter and put a hole in it run to auto zone get a new one. problem fixed, off to the race track. we get to the track practice the car he's turnning laps as fast as the fastest cars when he gets to the pits I tell him the good news. He starts laffing hard. So I ask'em what's so damn funny. He then informs me he never went past 3/4 throttle. He goes on to win his heat. starts on the pole for the feature revinge is sweet ok every thing is going smooth. leading the race on the 3rd lap right rear goes flat during a caution, head to the pits thinking the night was shot. we chang the tire just so he can go out to have some fun. But while we were changing the tire they cant get the restart right so we only loose one lap. 1 lap down dead last in a 20 lap race. not a good situation. lap 13 things are looking better, works his way to the front then a car spins, we get our lap back but have to start in the back with only 7 laps to go to end the story he works his way through the pack to 2nd catching the leader but ran out of time. my motor is back in its rightful spot in my shop awaiting its mate.
when i circle track raced i remember the track favorite was caught cheating so by the next race what he was doing became legal. that's one of the reasons i quit about 9 years ago and have never even gone back to watch a race.
its a good thing they didnt have that little rule going where you can buy the motor for $25 if its not legal.. not sure what its called, but i have heard of it happening at the tracks in arizona.. and what is so illegal about using your motor in his car? is there a motor restriction? i have heard that those circle track guys spend 5k for a motor.. i have always wanted to run on the track, but figured i could never afford it 1/4 mile is alot cheaper... lol
That's the "claimer" rule, someone can "claim" your engine. Don't think I would want to be on the selling end of that deal. They try to build those engines as cheap as they can, mostly stock parts w/cast pistons, etc.
