Don't worry- I'm not a maniac that's about to whip around the roads with no seat belts. I'm trying to do basically a complete as possible strip down of my parts car and I'm coming up on removing the belts to keep. IIRC there's a Torx bit that fits old ford belt bolts to remove them, but can I do it with hand tools? My air compressor isn't big enough for an impact wrench and this sucker definitely isn't driving anywhere.
T-50 torx bit on a breaker bar works the best. Buy the best one you can as the Chinese ones will snap everytime. Impact wrench is quite handy for this job. I know of no other tool that works besides the T-50 bit.
You might get a vise grip on there but you might also damage the outside of it. The torx is the only sure way I know of getting it off without damage.
I have used Allen wrenches jammed into Torx fasteners in a pinch, but that was usually reserved for when stripping a car in the junkyard, and being short of tools .... carrying my "light" toolbox. Got a full set of Torx sockets with me all the time these days.
Just switched mine out yesterday. I used the T50 bit & a 1/2 inch rachet. Worked great on the 1970 Maverick. All my seatbelts work now...woohoo..
Glad you got your belt problem worked out! If it can be done with a standard 1/2 inch then I should be able to pull it off without air tools.
