If I have a 5 lug rear end for a Maverick, can I pull the third member and swap in another 8" one out of a 60s Mustang ?

    Agreed...

AFAIK all used 28 spline axles & 1310 U joints. Early cases are not as strong as late '60s up.

The 9" can use different axle or U joint sizes that prevents a direct swap.

Another question. I bought a 75 parts car today. A 4 door. It had 5 lug drums. Can I just take those and slide them on the 72 car that has 4 lug spindles? Its probably temporary until I hustle the disc brakes.

No you can't. If only it was that simple. :)

OK so I will have to replace that whole spindle ? If that is the case I probably put those Mustang discs on it my buddy has.

As far as front spindles for drum brakes, the ones used for four lug are same as five...
