I found an AOD but have no history on it other than it's from the early 80's. Is there anything I need to inquire about?
It's all stock at the moment but when done I'm gonna look at 355 I think. Still have much more research to do before I get to that point.
Is there a difference in lengths between c4 and aod? And a difference if the aod came out of a truck or car?
Okay..... You,re good to go if you leave car as is with c4 and 3.oo ish gear. If you install AOD you,ll need to add more gears. Will get back to u on length. If different add in cost of driveshaft.
I did not look far at all. I googled c4 verse aod length. Copied and pasted from somewhere C4 and AOD Dimensions Overall Length (bellhousing to tailshaft housing end, flat-to-flat):AOD - 30 3/4 inch C4 - 27 3/4 inch C6 length - 28 1/2 inch or 28 3/4 inch Distance from Bellhousing to Insulator Mount (flat to mounting hole centerline): AOD - 21 3/4 inch C4 - 19 3/4 inch
I'm suspect of those numbers, the C6 I've seen are 4-5" longer than the C4 used in intermediate & compact. Tomorrow I'll measure & compare the C4 in my Fairlane(same as Comet) with a '88 T-Bird version AOD. Those are std length trans same as Mustang. Units in pickup & LSC Lincoln are slightly longer(have one of those as well but I ain't gonna dig it out).
Are you buying this AOD trans 1. Assuming its good and ready to install? OR 2. As a core to rebuild to install? This where you can get burned! Be there/done that! I installed a good used transmission i bought many years ago. Pump leaked! Had to take it back out. Ended up rebuilding the one I had.
This is for rebuild. I havent gotten close to engine build yet but they only want 75.00 for it which is the cheapest I have found so far. In the ad he stated he did not know condition or what it came out of.
You may want to remove the pan before buying it, if you read between the lines “do not know condition” = WENT BOOM!
I didn't get around to measuring trans, but I did take a pict of partial VIN stamped into the AOD. Since 1/1/68 it's been Fed law that all engines, trans & rears have at least a partial stamping. Soooo you say? Knowing what the codes mean will tell you exact year of trans, engine etc. Also tell the vehicle assembly plant. ID pictured is JH234742. J represents 1988 H was '87, G '86, K '89 etc(I was skipped) H is Lorain OH built T-bird & Cougar, F - Dearborn-Mustang, Y - Wixom-LSC Lincoln. X is St Thomas- full size A, Atlanta-full size N, Norfolk(plant was approx six miles from here). Knowing what plant produced will tell you car it was in originally. Norfolk(closed '07) produced F-Series trucks. If seller claims trans is from Mustang and ID begins with FA ,it's bogus. FA would be '85 full size. Stamp is at rear of case, just at point tail housing bolts on.
