Hey guys, I'm trying to help my buddy out with his 1962 Comet. He's not super comfortable with forums like this, so I told him I'd do the leg work. It's a stock 62 with three on the tree and a 177 engine. He's had various transmission issues for a while and he's always been able to at least treat the symptom. These days it behaves fine when it's cold, but once it warms up the clutch starts to make a whirring sound when it's let out and he can no longer get it into 1st or reverse. Right off the bat, it sounds like the clutch is out of adjustment, but the fact that he's still able to find 1st and reverse when it's cold threw me. I don't know what would be different when it warms up. Thanks for the help guys.
Thanks, but I don't think I understand your question. Are you asking about the color of the oil in the gearbox?
Can engine be started when hot if trans is already in gear? I'm assuming it has a non synchro 1st (was the norm with the 2.77 trans of era) & if clutch is dragging, it will be difficult if not impossible get into gear. Cold gear lube impedes movement of gears, so if clutch is dragging somewhat, could assist in getting trans into gear. Also when hot there is some swelling of clutch disc(admittedly probably less than .010) so it may not be releasing as fully when hot. I'm going to say clutch. BUT Clutch out should make no sound, at that point it's only spinning trans input shaft and cluster that's meshed with it. Although I had one with a broken spring, how it released & sounded was dependant on position of spring pieces trapped inside pressure plate. At times was all but impossible to get into any gear.
Okay, so we're going to investigate the clutch linkage and then the clutch itself. I'll come back once we know more. Thanks so much for the help guys!
