If you were to remove the vinyl top from a maverick, would there be paint underneeth or just metal? I am looking at a car right now that has a vinyl top, which I don't really want. Can I just rip it off? If so... how? :p (the car would be repainted anyways).

Most of the time Ford didnt paint underneath the vinyl tops, just sealent is all. I have heard over the years that most vinyl top cars were actually blemmed roofs. Instead of destroying the car they had a way to push it on down the line I suppose Which when i removed my top i did find a crease across the front of my roof. You have to at least remove all the chrome that surrounds it, it goes into the window areas about a half inch or so. Mine had a halo roof so I am not too sure about the dripedges. The vinyl is just glued onto the roof so it isnt too bad to get off due to age. Good Luck

My 1971 vinyl top car had paint under it but lots of glue which probably won't come off without removing the paint too. My 1972 Mav was painted too but was totally rusted. You should check carefully for bubbles or indications of rust under the top. Apparently, rust under the vinyl is really common.

Personnelly, I would rip it off. After years in the sun, the material dry rots and becomes more like a sponge. As noted, check it for rust before you buy. Any lumpy area is rust. I would adjust the price accordingly.

Check out my website for how I removed the top. www.geocities.com/scottcodon@sbcglobal.net
It is a major hassle, but what everyone else is saying it true. Mine was a 74, it "had" paint under it, no rust, but I had to physically remove the paint to get the glue off, meaning I sanded down to bare metal. Not fun. But worth it. The car lost a lot of it's "Granny" when I took the top off.

OW! Blown76Mav. That is what I feared to find under my top. Lucky for me mine was painted, garaged for 30 years, and pristine underneath. I was skeered to peel it off, though.

My 75 didn't have paint under the vinyl...
Now that I think of it, there was no roof under the vinyl!
Mine was rusted so bad the roof peeled off with the top.
I had the 3/4 'sport' top.

I have mulitple area with surface rust...inside the car. I also have a number of Non-factory installed sky lights. It will be interestinmg to see how much roof i have left after I remove the vynel. I know one area over the passenger seat is 12X24 inches gone.

My 72 had a vinyl top and had paint underneath along with tons of glue. it was a pain...and had to fill in all the little holes from the trim, but looks better... and had no rust... yeeesss.... :yup:

but, it was a blemmed roof....:bs: so, i have ripples going across my roof, and cant do much about it short of cutting that sheet metal off and replacing it.

You would be better off posting a "Wanted" ad in the "Wanted" section...
    http://mmb.maverick.to/forums/maverick-comet-wanted.14/

or browsing the "For Sale" section. Lots of members are parting out cars that may have those pieces, but not necessarily advertised...
