    I want a 70-73 Maverick
I'm not all that new to the board. I'm a Mechanic by trade and a Drag racer for fun. I'm Lookin for a 70-72 maybe a 73 maverick. But What do I look for?? What are the problem area's on these cars? I'm in no great hurry I just want to make sure I get a good one.

Once I do get one depending on what has already been done. I want to make a GT Clone, Some what of a resto-mod, Maybe a Mustang 2 front suspension, 4 wheel disc etc.

    Any Help would be great.

The cowl area is our cars' biggest hidden rust spot. Pour some water through the vents at the base of the windshield and make sure it doesn't end up in the cabin. Other than that the usual floor pans, torque boxes, trunk pan, lower rear quarters, lower door, battery tray...

The most problem areas are the cowl, floorboards. Rocker panels, wheel wells. Its nothing that cant be fixed though.

Hey St Thomas Dragway! Are you located near St Thomas?
Also I'm sure someone else will raise this but if you want to do a GT Clone you might be better off starting with a Comet, unless you want to change some stuff around. Otherwise a Grabber clone might be easier to create from a Mav.

The Motor in the Drag Car is a 2.8L 4 Cyl out of a 2006 Chevy Colorado Pickup. I'm Located in London Ontario, so I'm about 25 miles from St Thomas/Sparta.

Why would I start with a Comet if I want to do a GT Clone? Is a comet closer to a GT than a Maverick??

GT's are Comets. The Maverick equivalent is a Grabber. (Unless you're in Brazil, where there was a Maverick GT.)

You can make a Comet GT clone from a Maverick, but you'd need to swap the tail panel. Everything else is bolt-on.

Well the GT was a Comet-specific trim pkg. The grabber was the Maverick-specific one

If your looking at a Maverick or Comet, around London...Just look for rust, it'll be everywhere if it's a local car.
Inner fenders, torque boxes, rear frame rails, quarter panels, door bottoms, floors.........Local cars don't seem to have cowl issues..most didn't last long enough.
If your looking for a car, locally..I might be able to help.

I was thinking about the mexican GT. I don't have any problem going south to find a good one. A rust free body is #1 on my list, I can build a motor and drivetrain no problem. It's all the body work I don't want to get into.

Well if you're going to Mexico for it, you might as well look for one with a 4-speed, or one of those cool "Falcon Mavericks."

Check out this thread for all the differences between US and Mexican Mavericks:

It's an interesting read, to me anyway.
