I have a 77 maverick with a 65 mustang 289 motor a 87 5.0 aod tranny, and a 89 5.0 rear end with 3:73. I want to go faster. i was thinking about a f.i. 5.0 motor or making my 289 i high out put 289 or stroke it. but to what? help
I used to have a bumper sticker on the back of my street/strip '67 Fairlane that read, "How does it feel to be beat by a 289?" Of course, that was 1975-1979. +1 = 9
It's so easy and cheap to get the power out of a roller 5.0, that the 289 would never keep up. Don't get me wrong, the 289 WAS a great motor and had a fantastic racing pedigree, but the roller 5.0 has surpassed it. Want 400 hp? All you need is stock H.O. short block and add a set of heads. Never do that with the old 289. Might get close with a "K" code 289.
