71 Maverick with 8" - 4 Lug rear axle. I need to replace wheel studs, are they 'swedged' like the front drum studs are?. Can I push them out or do they need to be cut off?. thanks .
afaik front studs are pressed in and swedged - relief area below threads is mushroomed . Proper removal requires swedge cutter or drilling out from back then pressing. hav efun
Just stick a lug nut on them and smack them with a big hammer, they will come right out. Just finished doing on all four corners on my 72 five lug. I used impact to put them back in. As long as you get the right size knurl they will stay. Of course it is always best to have a shop press them out and in.
Never seen an old Ford that required any of this. You whack em with a big hammer to knock em out. New ones go right back in first with a hammer on the back side, then pull em all the way in with the lug nuts til they're fully seated.
Ford and Mopar typically 'SWAGED" front drum studs until Discs became universal. It was not recommended to remove without cutting swage or stud knurl can be loose. Replacement studs do not require swaging. I believe mfg's balanced hub and drum together and didn't want it removable. I drill back of stud removing head then push out front. http://www.fordmuscleforums.com/galaxie-pages/486992-removing-brake-drums-help-needed.html https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/627336-separating-the-front-drum-from-hub.html have fun
Yes the front are swagged like you say but you are asking about the rear and they are not. But even the front that little of an amount of swagging is no match for a hammer. Its your car do it anyway you want to do it
