Thanks stumanchu, Is yours a D/D now? Looking forward to continued progress. I need to study up on the fuel guage and figure out what needs fixed or replaced in the tank (presumably the problem area). C & G
My car is mostly a fair weather toy. It is very close to being tested on things like a 100 mile round trip, or a night at the dragstrip, but there are a couple things I need to sort out before I would drive it on a trip that would run the risk of being stranded or require an expensive, long tow. My sending unit was very ugly when removed, as was the entire inside of my tank. I was too cheap to buy a new one, so I re-soldered the wires on it, cleaned it up, tested it with an ohm meter, and put it back in. It was barely out of spec. on the ohm reading, but works very well. there is another part on the back of the cluster that has a plug on it that looks like a 9v battery, and this piece is part of what makes the gauge work. Many older fords (70s-80s) have the same part in their gas gauge circuts.....but the mounting brackets vary in configuration. My sending unit was missing the float, so I had to get that too. If your tank is cruddy inside, make sure you at least have a fuel filter somewhere to keep junk out of the carb. I probably spent enough money cleaning and re-sealing the inside of my tank that I could have bought a new tank....but it is good to go now at least. Just do as much research as possible when you run into problems.....it will save you money by doing stuff hopefully once, and getting parts that work/fit.....etc. By the way, I like your tires and wheels.
Thanks stumanchu, This will be my son's car for daily driving, so we are going to chase most of the small issues. We would like to drive it to CA next summer, but that may be a pipe dream. Thanks for the tips on the sending unit, it will be nice to get that corrected. I do miss a temp guage in these cars. I know it's not hard to add, just haven't dug into it yet. Stuck with the 14" wheels and went 215/70 on the front and 225/70 on the rear, we like it. C & G
Ok, Pulled the carb, cleaned with carb spray and ran fishing line in/through the small orfices. There was an obstuction in one of the idle pick up tubes. Idles well now. Other than seeming to run warm, it feels and sounds good. Will get a temp and o/p gauge ASAP. C & G
Hey guys, It just seems like the hoses are pretty darn hot to the touch (and they should be). We pushed a little coolant out the first few longer drives as well, but after reading the sticker on the fan shroud, realized we had overfilled the radiator. As to temp, I used a meat thermometer after one of our drives and after shutting the engine off it was reading 215-220 or so. After a little research, that may be within spec, but I will likely put a 180 thermostat in it. C & G
the engine will heat up sometimes 30* over normal when shut off at operating temp. not a big deal... the radiator will find it's own level that's one reason I made and installed a recovery tank.
