Is there a bearing in the steering column near the fire wall I can replace? I can move the shaft where it just enters the engine bay a half inch or so. I am not sure if I need a shaft steady bearing or pull the column to repair?

I don't think they had one originally since the box was right there to support it but in your case I would think you would need one.

true, does the rag joint flange come off the column shaft with a puller? That would make this easier.

No lower bearing, not necessary. Flange on steering shaft bolts to the rag joint, the rigidity of joint keeps shaft in place, plus aligned with steering gear shaft. Probably need a new rag joint, common replacement part.

that clears it up for me, since I went to a mustang rack with universal joints I will have to add a support bearing because of this.

I don't believe the flange comes off, probably need to pull the shaft out.

when I cut my column for the rack n pinion I had to install a support bearing in the end of the column.
I had pics but lost them in a puter crash.

When I cut my column for the Borgenson conversion, it didn't have a support bearing. I'm not certain it was never one there, but, everything is tight -- no issues.
