After I finished installing the floor shifter, realized that the shifter lever on the tranny (c4) won’t work. It’s in a different position. Where do I get that part? Can I change it myself or the tranny has to be dropped and opened? Pictures and advice will help me a lot. Thanks in advance
... you need a floor shift lever. may get one from a Mustang parts shop. you can do it yourself but the transmission pan must come off.
Here is a link to a factory Maverick one. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1970-FORD-...OOR-SHIFT-LEVER-IN-TRANSMISSION-/390965733593
With all the pitting it'd probably never seal. Looks as if lever was left in elements then bead blasted.
I am kind of in the same problem. I converted my 200 i6 to a v8 302. I have everything in place and running other than the transmission. The linkage doesn't work that was on the i6. It is easier to keep the colum shift and try and get parts here and there and Fab something together or just change over to a floor shifter? I am just running an automatic c4. Any advise helps
The auto column shift components are way more plentiful than the floor shift pieces. Are you using a factory type floor shifter, or is it aftermarket? Although I have never tried it, I have heard you can remove the lever from the trans and rotate it 180 and reinstall it. That will require you to drop the pan and possibly the valve body as well. However, you would have to do that anyway if you had the correct lever. If you go that route, there is also a seal you should replace as well. You may be able to buy an aftermarket shifter bracket/lever that attaches to the factory lever.
Some levers on C4s can be rotated 180 degrees, and some can't. Just depends on the shape of the lever. If you change your lever, be sure to replace both seals, the one in the case and the one in the lever.
Ok so I ended up getting some auto colum shift parts from another guy on the forum. Only thing, is I have no clue how to set them up. I bought the transmission linkage and lockdown linkage. Pictures below Any advice or a diagram would be great.
if you change the shift arm be sure to hold the nut on the inside of the transmission. letting it rotate and bottom out on the case is a no no. saw one break the lever end inside the case. had to have it brazed back on... do change the...shifter shaft seals.
Do you have a 2 or 4 barrel carb? Do you have headers? The kickdown lever should fit right on if you have a 2 bbl. If 4 bbl., you have to either buy or make an extension for the rod...if you google it, you should be able to find a holley video showing the part and where it goes. That little lever on the trans end is probably still on your trans. The shifter linkage will work if you dont have headers.....My car came with 6 cylinder shift linkage and headers, so I spent hours of frustration trying to figure out a way to make it work with a v-8.....and used a cable from a granada. It should work if you dont have headers and your lever on the trans points UP....I think.
Ok great. I would have preferred headers but at the time I had gotten a steal on some exhaust manifolds and stainless steel exhaust so I swiped that up. I do have a 4 barrel carb though.
I'm also switching my C4 from a column shift to floor shift and even with the info I've found online here and elsewhere I'm not sure how to get things hooked up correctly. I believe I have the Lokar floor shifter kit on per the instructions, but I can't find my paperwork. As it is hooked up now, when the engine is running and I move the shifter through the gear positions, nothing happens. I must have the linkage wrong, but I don't know what it is supposed to look like. Any help is greatly appreciated. I have read that part of the conversion involves removing the tranny pan to rotate something, but I confess I have no idea what to do. I pulled the pan off and there's nothing obvious to me on what might need done.
I found my lost instructions for the Lokar shifter online. I installed it as shown in this photo of the instructions; no other changes to the tranny itself.
