headers

Yea, the Tri-Y's fit like a glove in an 89 with a 157 tooth bell. Never tried the 88400's but I know others have and said they work too. The tri-Y's need to be tweaked to clear a 164 tooth bell

 

I’m working on a 2000 4x4 V8 and I’m afraid my only options are factory manifolds or those $700 Explorer headers.

 

Check on either therangerstation.com or rangerpowersports.com on their V8 forums. If anyone's tried them, it would be someone there. There's dedicated threads for headers on both sites

 

I have the 84400s on a similar setup as yours. 302 with column shifter c4 and p/s. The header itself fit fine and looked as if everything would fit with no clearance issues. The problem is the exhaust pipe coming down from the reducer. My exhaust installer even used 2" pipe in that area but it still had to be dimpled for the pitman arm. After the initial installation the left steering was affected enough that I took it back to the shop for the dimple. Also if you buy the painted ones, high temp exhaust paint will not stick to the primer. I tried scuffing mine and then painting but it flaked badly after they got hot. Passenger side fit with no problems.

 

Thanks for the info. I have to take the heads off to do gaskets any way and the exhaust pipe is all new from the manifold to the tips. So if it has clearance issues, then would be the time dimple the pipe.

 

I meant to say 88400s not 84400s. Curious though that some people have had no clearance problems with these headers and the pitman arm. Possibly could have been the installer I used. I had a complete dual exhaust system installed and overall I am pleased with the result as far as the sound and the look but the performance gain was a little disappointing.

 

I don't know of anyone w/ these headers who have not had issue, pittman hitting collector!

 

So the Hedman 88400 shorty's and go?

 

I don't know the "number" off hand, but that sounds about right. I wrote a tech article about it on here somewhere.

I wonder how those Headers would work on a 351W swap?

I will add this: Doug Thorleys fit a lot better.

 

The Hedmans are reasonably priced but I wish that I had seen that article before installation. I should have done more research. That is a much better solution than dimpling. Too bad Hedman will not make the mod necessary for these to fit our cars.
