installing a new in tank fuel pump... DeatschWerks DW400 Universal In-Tank Fuel Pump - 415LPH..(9-401-1001) need to know #1- what size fuse to put inline with (16-20 amps at typical operating pressures)? #2- should the relay amps match the fuse? thanks
Frank, what AWG wire are you running? If you're using the correct gauge wire you pick the fuse or breaker to match the wire size.
thanks B Mc D...I'll check and see what fuel pump fuse they used with the CV fuel pump assy. I used for my mod. (Airtex E2085E) ......
For a 20 amp circuit you would typically use 12 AWG and 10 AWG wire for a 30 amp circuit, if it's a constant running pump. If it's powered by a PWM controller you can get away with slightly smaller wire. The usual 30 amp relay would work in either case. Remember, fuses don't usually protect devices, they just protect the wiring when the device overloads.
If draw never exceeded 30A, fuse should never blow, as stated fuse protects the wiring. Doesn't mean pump could not lock, draw 28A, then over heat tank till gas explodes. At least wiring was protected.
blew the 10 amp fuse used with the old pump...replaced it with a 30 amp. ran for about 4 minutes and melted the cheap relay...have this one ordered and ready for pick up at Summit in the morning around 10 ish. Relay, 75 Amp, 4-Terminal, Bosch, Built-in Mounting Brackets PS.. and as Tom said...it didn't blow the 30 amp fuse just melted the relay...
