I am currently in demo mode on my 74 Maverick. Just pulled out the 250 6 cyl. I was told that the c4 trans will not work with a 302 engine. I was told to get a trans from a 289 or 302. I need some guidance on this.

You was told wrong. It will work but has less clutches.

So how does one learn how to rebuild it them selves? I've been looking everywhere and can't find much. No transmission shops here in town will help me do it unless I get a trans from a 289 or 302. So that leaves me stuck.
I'll have transmission pulled on Friday.

Assuming you're not going to be running it hard, continual full throttle shifts etc & your transmission is in good cond it'll be fine... If it's already tired, it'll need rebuilding.

If you want your transmission rebuilt tell them it's from a 302, probably won't know difference. There are obvious differences in 6 cyl C4 trans from 170 & 200.

what Tom said and tell them you decided to keep the 250 and need a rebuild.
you may also want to check another transmission shop.

They say the 250 C4 is the same as a V8...the 170/200 has 1 less clutch in the pack and related part(s).

Hollanders Interchange(cross reference junk yards use), lists the C4 for '71 thru '76 Mav/Comet 250/302 as same transmission. Also used in '71-73 Mustang & Torino.

Could also add a fourth band if I'm not mistaken ?

I can rebuild a engine and top loader. When I was in high school I used to on weekends rebuild the popcorn transmissions out of the 1965-66 Mustangs for a man who sold Mustang parts. The cluster gear always broke on them. They had a non synchronized 1st gear and this is why they broke.

Automatic is different. Many more parts involved. You tube could help with this.

There are two bands, period. One for 2nd other for reverse.

If it's the same transmission, should have same amount of clutches. Forty years ago I rebuilt a couple, used rebuild kits ordered from Sears. Be a good idea to watch a few videos.

Thank you all for the much needed input. I'm still aways away from doing trans/engine work, but it would be good to know what road I'm going down when ready. I'll pull out the tranny and put it to the side when ready. I'm sure by then I'll find a shop that I feel comfortable with to rebuild and modify the transmission for a 302. Not looking for a hot rod car nor do I plan on running it hard. Just a good sound with a dependable transmission. In the mean time, I'm still removing parts from engine bay, remove steering components and a lot of rust to cut out and rewelding of new steel. Trans/engine will more than likely be next year.

The C4 has a basic Id, 289/302 as well as 250 use the PEE designation, 170/200 are PEB . Those behind 351 were PEF, and 6cyl 240 were PEA. It's gonna have same parts, forget it's 6cyl origin.

I concur, PEE for both. Same everything according to the Ford service manual (I looked in the 1972 book)
Only exception is the servo. 302 had an "A" and the 250 had a "B".
The letter is marked on the cover - like this ------------

The amount of knowledge on this forum is amazing ! Wish I would have been on 3 years ago. I found a couple very detailed videos on rebuilding but was more than I wanted to tackle. The cheapest major transmission shop was 1,700 ! Finally through a buddy, found a guy that grew up doing it in his dad's shop till mid 30's just on the side now but doing it for 400 plus parts. So shop around...

I'm a little ignorant to the inner workings of transmissions. Is the difference in servo significant in any way?
