I am replacing the carpet on my '70 Maverick, which is long overdue. I would like to do this job myself, but am no means a carpet expert. Any tips on materials to use or installation tips. Thanks in advance, Brad

Its not hard.Tools?? A good pair of sharp scissors, and or utility knife some heat(lay the carpet in the sun) unrolled for a while its easier to work with and conformes better after softening up in the sun .Same tools you used to remove the interrior/seat belts. Some good contact cement for stubborne corners/edges.Put a good insulator/pad under the carpet before you lay the carpet. It will live longer, feel softer and be quieter than not useing some sort of pad/insulation.Once you install it,let the car sit in the sun for a day. This is to allow the carpet to relax and conform the the floor pan. Then do your final trimming/securing and install of the seats/trim.

Don't use Trim Parts carpet on a pre-75 car. It is molded for catalytic converter humps and you will have bumps in the carpet.

ACC has a good reputation for fit.

I just finished this job. I put down a heat shield that looked like bubble wrap with aluminum foil on both sides. I used spray adhesive to stick it to the floor, and put the carpet over it.

Where you have bolt holes going through the carpet, I used a hot soldering iron to burn the holes through. This melted the material on the outsides of the holes to keep them from unraveling, and made nice round holes. I pushed the iron (the one that looks like a pen, not a gun) all the way through so that the heating part went through (not just the hot tip) and left nice round holes around 7/16" around.

I invested in some really nice Fiskars scissors...

Someone on the board suggested that you use a drill bit in reverse mode to drill the holes for the seat belts. Using reverse keeps the carpet from unraveling. I did it and it worked well.

    Any Tips

Any suggestions on what type of insulation/heat pad to use? Or what type/style of carpet to use? I don't want to buy a pre-fitted one, I'd like to buy just a roll of carpet and install/fit it myself, but I'm not sure what is the best or where to look. Good post, thanks for the replies

Unless you want a major hassle......get a prefitted kind. A flat roll of carpet will not lay out right on a non-flat car floor.
