The trunk of my Maverick has some surface rust as well as a couple tiny pin holes. I bought some Por-15 and am about to start the process of cleaning and coating the entire trunk to prevent future rust. But it looks like maybe oil was spilt in the entire pan of the trunk. I know I need to remove this completely before I start painting. Can anybody tell me the best way to remove oil and residue from metal?
Brake cleaner works well. I'd scrub it down with Dawn dishwashing detergent if its really heavy and then use the brake cleaner.
I wouldn't think so... don't quote me on it. I know it will get the oil out however. Check your parts supply store for a prepping agent for paint if your worried about it
First MEK in my gas tank and now MEK on the body panels. Sounds like I need to get a big vat of MEK and just dip the whole car in it.
I used MEK to clean the paint off of this dash. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=57059&highlight=blu%27s Here is where I used MEK to clean my gas tank. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=25043 I guess you can tell I like the stuff.
I read an online article about using products like Brakeleen for cleaning up parts. Brake cleaner contains some chemicals that can become toxic at certain temperatures. I would do some research before using it on something that would be in an enclosed area. I think a paint/body guy could chime in with some idea that may work better.
There are several products that we use in the body shop that would work well, 3M Wax and Grease Remover, Acrysol, and Dupont makes a few as well. I just recommend going to any auto paint supplier and tell them what you want and see what they carry.
You dont want to use MEK (Methyl Ethyl Ketone) in an enclosed area...Like in a trunk. The fumes can damage your eyes and blind you.
not saying I'm recommending it cuz idk, but would marhyde (sp) work for something like this? I'm just curious...
