Been a long time since ive been on here but thought id upload some photos of a maverick dirt style! Stopped on the project for awhile as the class it was gonna run in got cancelled, due to increased interest the class has been reborn and the last few months have seen much progress.
Very nice I've built many an oval track car but all of mine ran on pavement. I just sold my Limited Late Model that I built for a local 3/8 mile paved oval. They dumped that class also and the brand new car never ran a lap. The guy that bought it is trying to retro-fit it backwards to be a Street Stock now. In fact, another racer just bought my 355 Cheby on Saturday. I had to shovel 2 feet of snow from my entire drive way in order to get his truck back to the garage. I'm dying now but at least the engine is gone. What size track are you building for? What are your engine limitations? Keep us up to date
4/10 and a 3/8 mile. The engine im using is a 351w. The rules call for a hydralic cam (if i use cast iron exhaust manifolds i can run any lift), cast iron intake, 500 cfm 2 barrrel, stock heads, and stock suspension mounts. Im runnin 70 windsor heads, a 86 truck intake, not sure what the cam is im gonna try it (it came with the motor was raced previously with headers in a chassis car), Canton road race pan, 65-67 hipo exhaust manifolds, and a built 500 holley with the flow control air cleaner. Gonna use a hydralic operated clutch hooked to a 3spd and send to the tires through a cup style floater 9 in using 5.14 lightened n polished gears and a 31 spline ltwt spoiler.
My cars were all metric chassis (Monte Carlo) with Performance Bodies Dodge Intrepid or Monte Carlo aluminum and fiberglass bodies. Frame had to be stock to the center of the rear - then 2x3 back and built for a 4 inch ride height. I built an outraous offset roll cage, laid back 20 degrees and built for a 44 inch roof height. I was able to get 62% inside and 51% rear weight out of it. Our lower a-frames had to be in the stock location but almost everything else was a free for all. Mopar screw in ball joints, 4 jacker bolts, dropped spindles, 10.5 to 1 engine, 4412 Holley 500 2 barrel, 180 degree over the top headers exiting through the passenger door, 9 inch rear with a spool running 620 or 633 gears. Tires were 10 inch Hoosier slicks on 10 inch rims. I ran a 3 link rear with a Watts linkage set up. My cars were the only ones that had a Watts and the driver said that it was the most stable car he ever drove - no rear steer at all. My Maverick is getting the Watts now for the street. It was fun at times but just I couldn't take the sleezy promoter anymore, the "Buddy" system that I had to fight every week and the tech system that did nothing but fight against you. I wasn't too sad to have our class dropped because it forced me to get out of it and get back to working on my Maverick. I am enjoying seeing the pictures of your progress. Let us know how the car runs and GOOD LUCK with your season.
old posts on this project http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=28776 http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=28705 http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=21225 http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=20866 Sad i started this project 4 years ago!
Dirt track racing is a lot of fun. But, I remember racing 1 night and working at least 5 nights on the car. I'm too old for that now. Good luck.
Most recent photos its on 4 wheels ready for its appointment at the exhaust shop on monday. Couldnt get the hipo manifolds to fit on a 351w stuffed in a Maverick ... maybe ill put a 302 in my Falcon and use them there. the Maverick badge is on the dash just incase anyone asks what it is. the ole windsor has a lil blow by gonna stick some restore in the pan and cross my fingers. Waitin on the hydralic throw out bearing to show up and ill take her for a spin down the block. Overbuilt for a bomber style dirt car but i guess some just cant build junk lol. hopefully start final fitting of the body in the next week ... cant wait to see her with clothes on ses been naked toooo long.
latest Some photos ... cant wait to see it outside. It took forever to figure out a way to make the nose resemble the Maverick. More photos soon.
True true Camaro stuff is all that is available but the lil touches make the difference. Anf the chassis is all Ford! Oh yes its a real Mav bumper but dont freak it was rusty and bent before i started, a bfh and some paint and its perfect.
on track It amde it to the track this past weekend, didnt run so well ive got a fuel problem i believe to be to much ethanol in pump gas. And an over heating problem partly due to the fuel but im gonna build some duct work to get more air into the radiator. 260 degrees when it blew steam out the vent but i was impressed after my dad stalled it ... it started right back up and he drove it to the pits. try again in 2 weeks.
