The cheapest one you can find that fits. :)
I don't remember for sure but I think there was something about the 66 289 that was different - I know it has the 6 bolt block but I think there was a 150 tooth flex plate? If you use the 302 157 tooth flex plate you can use any 302 small bell for the cars with the automatic.

Paul, can a 302 be bolted up to the c4 that is behind a 250 ci.? Would I need a different trans or modify the one I have?

Yes, it is a direct bolt in as long as they are both a column shift or both a floor shift C4. While you have the C4 out you should remove the smaller of the two vacuum modulator lines and plug it at the source. If it isn't a dual line car then it won' have two lines going to the modulator. You should use a green stripe modulator.

Thanks for the answer. The 250 is running well at present, but it is always good to know what the options are if a problem arises or I decide I need more hp.

    Street deacon,
I should make sure you understand that the 302 will use a different flex plate but either the 250 or 302 converter can be used. If you put a mild cam in the 250 converter will give you a slightly higher stall speed behind the 302...
    just making sure.
