A water ammonia solution to neutralize the acid then acetone to clear the water.

follow pauls suggestion. acetone only dilutes the acid like water. you need a base to neutralize it. keep the base weak\diluted though so you dont create too much heat if you have any gas fumes floating around in the tank.

I'm gonna give it a shot. Depending on if it cleans up ok and if I can get a sending unit (I posted a question thread....I'm hoping a Mustang unit will fit???), I may get some POR-15 tank sealant.

Changed my mind. This tank is stinking up the whole neighborhood. I've never smelled anything this bad. The darn thing is in my back yard and I can smell it in the house.

I popped out the sending unit to take a look inside and it's really bad. I think if I acid cleaned, it would eat through. Plus mouse urine has really eat up the mounting flange. Not to mention what I would do with 16 gallons of acid and water. I'm chucking it in the dump tomorrow and ordering a Mustang tank. That will give me piece of mind.

Recycle it! or give it to someone else who wants it.
Por-15 makes a kit to clean and coat the inside and outside of fuel tanks - it costs about half what a new tank does but it can make a very bad tank into a "like new" tank.

We tried to clean it out at work today for the heck of it. It is solid but there is alot of build up. A chain may get some of it. No leaks. I just don't feel good about coatings. If anybody wants it....come get it!

If you were closer to California I'd totally take you up on that offer! The PO took out the tank and put in a faulty fuel cell and I've been looking everywhere for something else that wouldn't cost me over $100. Drat...

Thanks to being under a tornado watch all day....I didn't get much done. Really not much I could do anyway because I'm waiting for shift linkage and the gas tank to arrive. I did get a few parts in today. Autolite plugs,Autolite wires, fuel filter and a 250 air cleaner decal. I plan on getting the wiring and ign done tomorrow.

I got the Mustang tank in today for my Maverick. It came with everything to install it....even a new inlet hose and mounting bolts. It had a small bend on one edge but no big deal to straighten.

Next step is to cut my floor out and extend the rt side over to fit the Mustang tank. Here's a pic from another member who did this. I plan on cutting mine different...completely moving the rt side over and lapping it so I can spot weld it all back in place.

No progress this week between work and the bad weather this past weekend....and this weekend looks just as bad. I did finally get the parts to get my MIG welder up and going again so that's one plus. Still waiting on my shifter linkage to come in and still haven't got the 12v supply run to my ign. module. :(

We are going through a flood of historical proportions here at the moment but due to a half day off, I was able to tinker with the car a little bit today and actually heard it crank! Hooked up the battery and held my breath....turned the key and crank crank crank!

That thrills me because I had suspected wiring problems....so relieved! All I have to do is get a keyed 12v power supply for the Duraspark and get some gas to the pump and she should be running.

Today I got to here it run. I wired the Duraspark up and ran a hose to a gas can (no tank in my car at the moment) and it fired up on the first crank. I'm still not 100% sure about the way I have the module wired up but it sure was great to heard the little car running again after 14 years (I found some insurance paperwork in the car and it seems 1996 was the last time it was on the road). So far so good for my Craigslist engine. No leaks, no noises and seems to run great.

Just gotta verify the Duraspark wiring and get the shift linkage on....then it's on to the brakes. Hopefully it will be driveable soon.

Pretty stoked about the progress this weekend. It's running and I have inspected the wiring and it all seems good...no mouse chewed wires. I installed new bulbs and all of the exterior lighting works. The wipers and blower motor work. So far the only issues may be with the cluster. The turn signals aren't blinking on the panel but all of the other warning lights appear to work. I did notice the lt turn signal has no detent so I guess I need to start looking for a turn signal switch. Also glad to see (when I was chasing wires under the dash) no signs of waterleaks.

Ordering stuff for the brake overhaul this week so I can actually drive it....but it will be a while before it's actually road worthy. I may tinker with getting the stereo system replaced while I'm waiting for the brake parts.

So here was the nightmare under the hood 2 months ago:

Here it is today. A $200 Craigslist engine and tranny plus many other new parts to get them installed. The wiring to the DS module is temporary and I bypassed the heater core suspecting issues. Pretty good progress so far...I hope it continues!
