Thanks. That helps a lot. Maybe I'll use my Flex-a-Lite controller, since it has the AC-on function and timed run with key off, to control the low speed and control the hi speed -- alternatively with low speed -- with another temp sensor and 80A circuit. Don't suppose you know the switching temp for the original idiot light sensor. Probably too hot to use as the high side control. Or, maybe I'll do the low speed only and see if I even need the high speed. The Champion 3-row radiator seems to have outstanding cooling capacity. Sure would simplify things if I only needed the low speed. Lots to think about. Thanks, everyone, for describing your setup.
that's what makes this one so simple it's all made for you. ...switched on12V to red wire...red/green wires to high/low fan...two wires in the middle to your sensors... $10 at Pull A Part...
I can see why you used it. I might still go that way if I can get one for $10, even though I already bought a controller. Expect they'll be at least twice that around here. I never find any deals in our junk yards. I'll see what I can find.
get the temp sensor for the temp you want it to operate at... mine are... (1) (Low side)...on 185/ off 170...installed in intake... (2) (high side)...on 205/ off 185...installed in T-stat housing... ......
after i got everything installed, i bought a new...Volvo...relay for $55. if you go this route, get as much of the stock Volvo harness as you can. this way there will not be any splices. Frank
Frank, OK, thanks. My bro in Arizona DOES have a good junk yard connection. I asked him to see if they have any Volvos with the controller. Any particular year or model? All I knew to tell him is it should have 2 fans or a two speed fan. Sent your picture of the controller. Jim
i got this from Jays tech article... '92 and up...W/E-fans.(2) ...mounted on the rad. support. ...... 9442933 Cooling Fan Relay (2 speed),
I see. Does your car ever get up to 205* and turn on the high speed? Edit: I forgot, you have an auto trans and A/C, etc. I don't have any of that.
You can also use a BMW #61311378073 dual temp sensor for the volvo fan controller (or any controller for that matter). But you have to use a thread adaptor. http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=200028 Just ignore the abundant bowtie references...
i got all the parts to do that but couldn't find a place to install a 22MM threaded hole...i didn't care to go the in hose route...also that sensor is a 195 low/205 high. ......
Jim The Flex a Lite# 31165 is the one I tried on my Taurus fan with no long time luck. To high amp draw.. Talked with the tech guys at flex a lite and he said that unit WILL not take that high amp. draw ( thats was after I bought it ).
Thanks for that, Mavdog. Did you run the hi speed thru that controller? I'm thinking of using it only for the low speed and doing a separate hi-amp circuit for the hi speed. Haven't sketched the wiring diagram yet but I don't think it'll be that hard to figure out. If yours didn't last running just the low speed I'll give up on that controller. I'd like to use it (since I bought it) to turn on the low speed with the AC. Wish junk yard parts weren't so expensive around here. I called the one I usually go to (about 20 miles away) and they wouldn't/couldn't even tell me if they had a Volvo in the yard. "Should be one here" was all I could get from them. That's why I prefer new parts if I can get them. Used to really enjoy a junk yard crawl but not so much anymore. Jim
Jim How soon due need a volvo controler ??????????? Because I need to go to the junk yard and get some for a friend he want 2 of them . I will not be able to go untill after the hollidays. Jay
