It's not hard at all to get 20 with a carb in a Maverick. My 331 gets 16 MPG running at 75-80 mph on the freeway with a 3x2 carbed 331 backed by a C-4 and 3.50 rear. An HO or F4TE (this is the Explorer cam) cammed roller 5.0 topped with a high rise dual plane and a 450-600 cfm Holley and an electronic ignition will do it without problem, especially if it's backed with an overdrive transmission

Definitely, but to get into the 20 mpg range, you will need overdrive or to never exceed 50-55mph. Not something I can do.:biglaugh:

    something to think about

I was getting 27-28 mpg on the freeway with my EFI and AOD setup 3.80's

and 29-30 with the EFI AOD and the turbo and 3.80's

It all just depends on your personal preferances now im back carb (much nastier spec'd motor) and getting 10-12 with a 4 speed and 3.73's

my usual speed driving around town (at home) dosent go any higher than 55 anyway since thats the speed limit around here unless i take the express way(i rarely do unless im in a hurry), if i take it on vacation 60-75mph out near rocky mount and up through charlotte.

You know I have no clue about Throttle Body Injection. But Sounds/seems like it would be a good mix of both carb and electronic. Though the only experience I have of it is in my brothers Caddy... Might be something worth looking into aswell... But i'm probably really wrong.
