Yes, dynoed. But on a chassis dyno, so I had to calculate the parasitic losses back in to get the engine hp. I think I calculated conservatively. It feels comparable to the new 5.0 in the 2012 mustang, so factor in the weight differences, etc, and figure it out. A buddy bought one, and we rode both our cars back to back. He thought mine was quicker, I thought his was, but both of us felt it was nominal. We would like to drag together in the near future. Here are my rockers...interestingly, when I type in the Ford stamped numbers, these come up as 1.72, not 1.7...F3ZE-6529-AB If you go this route, USE LOC-TITE!!! I had one come out while passing another car, and when I got in to fix it, 2 more were loose. I pulled them all and acetoned out the holes, and loc-tited them in. Also, those came loose the day after the dyno, so I may actually have dyno'ed it on only 7 cylinders.
What did it put to the wheels? im sure you ran through a C4 I think. Im surous to see what my car does on teh dyno in a couple weeks. it has a smaller cam than you but with trick flow heads. Id be happy as heck with 350. If those gt40s got you you that much then Drew should be more than happy with them, but I dont think he will want anywhere near as much cam as you have with how much he drives it.
I agree, but knowing what kind of cam he runs helps. What this says to me is if he can run that crazy-ass cam with stock GT40 heads, then the cams I'm looking at won't be a problem at all. I was just looking for a way to run a moderately bigger cam without worrying about my rocker studs, but if GT40's can do that for me and throw that much more HP into the deal I'm sold. And if I can muster up just a little bit of patience I can have them for less money than I'd spend fixing the stud issue on my current heads.
...And since this is a build thread, here's my status as of tonight: Bearings and gasket set arrived, waiting on oil pan and piston rings. Still need to order the cam. Got the field narrowed down to just a couple of options based on the GT40 heads, but not ordering it until I have those. I have four clean, beautiful pistons, three fugly ones, and one soaking in carb cleaner. Will take that one out, finish cleaning it up and dip the next one tomorrow night. By Sunday I'll have them all done and if my rings have arrived by then I just might be installing them. Will probably go ahead and install the crank this weekend either way. I scouted out the main junkyard I haunt at lunchtime today, no GT40 heads there. I've got two more I will check out Saturday. Also got a want ad out on Craigslist, and an email out to the only guy currently advertising them within driving distance. So, one way or another maybe I'll have my heads or at least made have arrangements by this weekend. We'll see... Next weekend I would love to be yanking the engine out of my Maverick, as there are still several things I want to use off that engine like the timing cover, oil pump and pickup tube, intake, etc. but my inlaws are coming to visit for a few days, so I'll more likely just be doing other things like maybe installing the heads and cam, painting the new oil pan, or just not doing a damn thing but wishing I was in the garage. Hell, who knows? Maybe my father-in-law might even like to get his hands dirty. But, probably not.
That's because they are 1.72:1 ratio. I skipped back to look at this one again. You know....if you were to use this cam with a set of 1.7 or 1.72 rockers to increase the lift, along with GT40 heads (with either 1.84/1.54 or 1.90/1.55 valves) you'd be in pretty damn good shape. 400hp should be easy with that setup.
im not sure if the gt40 heads have the 1/2" head bolt holes for the 351. the 302 uses 7/16" bolts. check that before you try bolting them on the 351. also increasing displacement and nothing else wont make any significant hp gains. it just lowers the power band. you do get more torque out of the 351 over the 302 due to the rod to stroke ratios and the bigger stroke. so depending on your cam choice you should be close to the hp level that scooper is at. you will have a ton of torque and that makes for a very fun street car.
IMPORTANT!!! I am running this cam on significantly different springs compared to stock. The stock springs would bind much sooner than this. I would guess around .500 or maybe a little less. So whatever cam you get, get matching springs or it may all come apart.
Went there last time... Had to widen out the holes on my 302 heads before, was a lot easier than I expected it to be. Just need a good sharp bit and plenty of oil. Yeah, these simulations are all fun and everything but there are too many little nuances to account for. Such as "Small tube headers with mufflers, no cats." That's one of just a few options in a drop-down menu in this software, but there's an entire exhaust system to consider and no way to do it. Different intakes flow differently, etc. It won't be dead-on but it's a good enough ballpark figure for selecting a cam, which is what it's for. I'm not too hung up on the actual numbers and I won't take it as gospel unless I put it on a dyno. I figure I'm looking at anywhere from 350-400 HP and 380-430 TQ, and I think we can all agree that wherever it actually falls between those figures it's going to be a blast to drive. Yep, I've got that covered. The springs on my 302 heads that came with the 268H K-kit are the same ones listed for for all of the cams I'm considering so far, so I'll be transferring them over to the GT40's.
Chem-Dip is wonderful stuff. The only thing I have used that is better is Safety-Kleen Carb Dip, but I don't think you can get it unless you are a business.
Just went and scouted out another junkyard. Found six pairs of GT40P heads, but not a single GT40. All the 97's I saw had P heads... On a side note, it wouldn't surprise me if the headers in those GT40P Explorers could fit a Maverick. I'm not going to be the one to try it though.
I can smell it from here....woooo Those Explorer headers are gross, they shouldn't even be considered a header, plus I've seen a few just fall apart.
That they are. They may or may not be any improvement over an iron manifold, and they're certainly no improvement over the exhaust that I already spilled Hollywood levels of blood over getting in there... Not venturing back into that unknown territory over some spark plug problems.
