    Over such a short span (less then 4 ft) anything thicker is just added weight the wide base and short walls help with torsional rigidness. 90% of your shelf connectors are the same thickness around 1/8th inch

    I would think that 1/8" would be plenty stout enough. In a car with a full frame I bet the frame material is not much thicker inf any than that, I could be wrong.
