Wow Frank, Bummer on the axle location being messed up. They certainly didn't make cars with robots back then, like they do now. My concern with this would be that the car may be prone to launch crooked, especially now that you are tweaking it up with the solid links and traction goodies. I would think it would try to go a bit left by your description. It may be able to be band-aided a bit with the front end alignment, but while you are focused on this, it may be your best opportunity to zero it in right. This @#$% ain't easy at times, is it?
Got the driver side front spring position straightened out this morning..... Also moved the rearend locating bolt in the leaf springs back 3/8" to get a little more clearance at the front of the fenderwell opening..... Here the driver side spring eye bolt holes slotted to move the position back..... Here I welded in the front of the inner bolt hole, ground it smooth and cleaned the hole back up..... After double checking spring position I welded a reinforcement on the outer bolt bracket..... and here it all is with some fresh chassis paint on all the repaired areas.....
I was really enjoying the pictures of the nice welding until some bright green slag popped out of my computer and stabbed me right in the eyeball. Probably should have been viewing this post with my welding helmet on ... owwwwwwww......
Sunday morning I got the springs bolted in place with the new shackles..... After that I got all the surface rust off the rearend housing..... Then a friend brought by a C4 he was having an issue with so I tore that apart to check it out..... The springs in place..... Here's the rearend housing after clean up..... and here's the scattering of the trans.....
Went down this morning and finished cleaning up my buddies C4 and put it back together..... After that I figured out I had the tranmission mess going so I might as well go through mine and get it done..... So I disassembled mine and cleaned everything up..... Then I mocked up the new bellhousing on the case and found I had to make a minor clearance on the case then everything was good to go..... I will also need to mill a little off the front of my B&M pan to clear the bellhousing..... Here's my buddies C4 back together..... Here's my C4 out from under the bench and washed off, along with one of the new bell and brake valvebody..... and mine all apart and cleaned up.....
You're a brave man ... I don't think I ever want to look at a pile of trans parts like that on my bench .... makes my head hurt. Gimme a nice simple Holley carb to tinker with. On the flip side... good thinking to do both at once while you are "in the zone" ... probably makes you sharper at attacking both of them.
