Ok.. kind of putting the cart before the horse here.. but just figured I'd share some of my latest Photochop work(on another members car since mine still looks like unrestored crap).. to show where I'm likely headed with color schemes. The rear treatment will be similar and I'll mess around with a few ideas in the next couple of weeks to add to the thread as I get more time to chop. I'll also likely nix the turn signals in trade for some nicely radiused intake ports with brake cooling ducts.. or round style driving lights for that "quad light" GT look. Also.. no PS critics please.. I only roughed it out in less than an hours worth of work.. and most of that was in changing/resizing things up to get a rough idea printed out so it's by no means intended to be a finished rendering. And yes.. that's a poorly drawn hood tach there because I couldn't quickly find a nice front shot of one to cut and paste on. Amazingly enough.. no one ever seems to take straight on shot of their cars hood mounted tach. lol yeah.. I know.. it's loud and obnoxious.. but it also fits my personality and what I've always invisioned I'd do to a Maverick or Comet when I found one. The motor will be small.. but rev happy(7,500+ rpm) and snotty as hell(ultra-light bobweight) to match the look. Now that I can finally see it on paper.. I can't wait to get some other projects out of my hair and get going on it.
its your car...do what you want...but if i can give my opinion i would black out the grill and headlight bezels then black out the rear panel and tailights. i think that would contrast good with the white and red
Thanks.. I hear you loud and clear and all comments are welcome. My skin is plenty thick and that's why I put the mock-up out there for all to see. The main reason that I didn't do the traditional look is simply because.. it's already like that.. and I see enough of those "stockers" around here and at car shows. Plus.. I've always liked the wilder "sporty" looks of the Mopars and other dechromed looking musclecars. "WILD" is the key word here. Also goes along with the stock interior color and the motor will be red with polished aluminum to tie it all together. Unfortunately.. cops will see me coming from a mile away with colors like this. That's ok though.. because the way I've always driven.. I'm always looking for them first. PS. there's also something fairly subtle(which seems like an oxymoron of sorts on a car like this).. which I've done to this rendering that will be carried through to the final design. If you can't guess it.. then you'll have to wait until it's actually done before I'll say what it is. I'm pretty sure no one will catch it though.
It's good to be different or else you would not have a Comet in the first place, I like it makes it stand out more
I posted some pix in the following thread on pg 14, post #135 of my unrestored hood tach. I can take more if this will be of an help... http://www.mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=58349&page=14 I agree w/ a previous post on the black out grille/tail or even a charcoal. I think the red in the grill and the rest of the car is a little to much read.
Thanks for the helpful post mojo. As much as I would like to use one of those(there's another of your car in the gallery which has an even better view).. it needs to be from the same "straight on" perspective as the model used above. If you have any pics from that angle please feel free to post em' up. If I can't locate one.. I'll likely end up just doing a 3D model so I can just flip it any old way I want.. but don't have the time to mess around in that much detail just yet. About the red striping on the grill.. I myself am not so sold on that just yet either. I did my first print without those and liked it.. then did that particular revision posted here for print and my version got "voted off the island" by my whole family. They actually said.. "the tribe has spoken"..LOL. I figure since I'll be driving it.. and doing most of the work myself(although my 13 yo son will help me a fair bit).. I'll end up doing what looks good in the real light of day. In my minds eye.. I can't see covering up the "GT chrome trim" running across the grill with red paint(or striping tape for avoiding damaging the chrome with paint prep).. and at the very most it would be VERY fine red pinstriping for subtly detail when up close. The model used above did not have the chrome trim or else I would have done it the way I thought would have looked best. I have plenty of plug-ins to do chrome looks.. but again with the details and time. In regards to the blacked out treatments. The problem I'm having is that the multi-color scheme is sometimes distracting to the whole flow of the paint scheme/cars lines and often takes away in some small way shape or form from the final product. Of course it also looks much stealthier that way(which I also like).. but with this "in your face from a block away" color scheme.. that is just the opposite direction of which I'm trying to travel here. I don't expect everyone to like it.. but I suspect that the autocross/road/drag racing, and car show circuit will never have seen the likes of one quite like this. Which is entirely the point. :Handshake
I like it. Especially the stripe going over the top of the car. I didnt think that would look right on our cars.
Yeah.. I've seen a few attempts through the years and I believe the proportions need to be right to make it really look good. Lemans stripes just don't work on these cars IMO. Here's another view and stripe version I've had in mind for years now.
Looks awesome! I have some hood tach pics, but not straight on. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=58349
Thanks for that link! I may be able to use that one. Might need to 3d it to more easily skew the angle.. but it may just work well enough for the lo-res/rough drafts I'm working with here. Thanks much.. and I really dig your cars color scheme too. If you think about it.. aside from colors.. my scheme isn't that far off from yours. IMHO, it's nice to be a bit different from the pack as long as it's tastefully done. Almost looks like the factory could have done it.
I like the whole look but...Painting the whole grill red takes away its greatest attribute...Its' depth, You lose the character/definition in the grill. Heres my thought on how to have your cake and eat it too... Paint the grill red the way you want it...Mask the face of the grill (egg crate portion) and paint horizontal/verticle surfaces black. This will give it the depth it needs to not look 2 dimensional. Now...Piant the inner most ring of the head light trim black. This should tie it together and give it the look you are after. Just a thought. Good luck whichever way you go...Not gonna loose that car in a parking lot...LOL...
VERY COOL that side angle actually gives me a good idea of how I want my stripes to look but instead of "GT" I want 347 at the back and not so far back I want the stripes to start then the numbers to cut in and then the stripe to continue I agree about the grill the black trim or accents would really set that grill off. and would really help the cars style. I would be proud to drive that car anywhere way cool and not so obnoxious just bright and VERY refreshing. I like the roof stripe. hows about a shot of the back of the car?
I like the red/white concept of the scheme, especially the side stripe, but way way too much red on the grill
lol.. man.. tough crowd. The grill is just photochopped in solid fill color because the pic I found in the archive wasn't of high enough quality to get full detail. Plus, I really didn't want to spend more than a half hour to mess around with it on rough drafts like these. Crooked/badly spaced lines.. overcut crops.. mismatched colors.. etc. It's just a bit of fooling around to see if the idea's are even sound enough to consider spending more time on, is all. Mavman actually hit the nail on the head with his idea's above. Only in my guesstimation it will likely end up being a blacked out grill center section(like the first pic). BUT.. I will leave the horizontal chrome accents alone and then fully "color face" the front of the grills mesh with red as well. That will keep the lines fully visible but still slightly coordinated with the rest of the car and the black opening will still be fairly substantial from a distance. I'll eventually spend some more time to come up with a tail panel scheme.. but looking at the front.. I'm sure you guys can imagine it will be all red too. I'm also contemplating on having the tail light housings chromed to kill some of the red back there and "bling it up" a bit more in the process. I'll also be doing a custom spoiler for the rear too(this year for sure).. but that is going to remain an ancient chinese secret for a bit longer.. And you guys ain't chinese.. so.. you'll have to wait for that one. I can tell you this though.. it will knock your socks off and many will say.. "damn.. why didn't Ford/Mercury do that from the factory?". Well.. I actually know why they didn't.. but telling you that would be too big a hint.
