My harmonic balancer has some of elastic/rubber protruding, the rubber has cracks; wondering if that is a sign the balancer needs rebuilding/replacing? My car has a vry slight vibration that can only be felt through the gas pedal. Wonder if this cud be possible cause?
Thanks for ur input Bryant. Always appreciated. I might have said in the 1st. post "I have a slight vibrations", I probably shud have said, more like a very slight buzzing sensation". What do u suggest, have the unit rebuilt or go w/ one of the aftermarket products. I know the unit I have will go back on w/o any fitment issues. I wud like to keep it that way. I have never had one rebuilt, so, don't know how they usually preform. I've heard a lot of pro's/con's on a lot of the offshore parts - kind of leaning toward trying the rebuild route.
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/pio-872032/overview/make/ford I like these ones, not sure where they're made but seem to be a quality product. They do make non sfi approved ones too, but they're only $50 cheaper. Also the one listed is 28oz imbalance.
If the engine is basically stock I'd use a stock replacement... With rubber hanging out, no doubt what it now has... Probably original? Advance has Dorman for $85.00, probably find one on ebay for less...
My setup is basically stock, mild cam, headers and 600cfm - cruiser. I think a stock setup is all I need.
I purchased one of the non-SFI Summit branded balancers. It is a surprising value for the $$$. It has timing index marks that will accommodate A, B or C position pointers.
A new balancer is also going to make the eng last longer even if this is not your problem,so you`re not really losing anything as far as money goes.
I hear you Dan! That is on my things to do list as soon as the spring season arrives. I have been driving it to long w/ that being a concern. I don't know if that is the reason I feel the buzzing sensation thru my gas pedal, but it might be. My nx guess wud probably be flexplate/torque conv..
Is this the one that u purchased? I like the fact it has spacers/washers needed to make the job simpler. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-163289/overview/make/ford
Yes. I'm using a March serpentine system and did not need the spacers. Make sure you order the correct P/N for your engine (28 oz or 50 oz).
I had that same balancer on my last motor, I sheered the pulley bolts on mine a few times even with grade 8. Also didn't care for the spacers, makes it hard to install the crank pulley.
Why were the bolts so heavily loaded in sheer? Sounds as if the bolt torque was lost. I agree the spacers are not a great design. My March crank pulley bolted up directly to the balancer, requiring very minor shimming of the water pump pulley for belt alignment.
does your stock balancer have spacers... one of the reviews..."Nice damper. Don't care for the spacer, the instructions for the spacer dont make sense and are incorrect. Tech guys couldn't help."
It may have been what was happening, but the second time round I installed them with blue lock tight and they still broke. Another thing I didn't like about this balancer was the timing marks that I needed were on the inside, which make it very hard to read.
