Yeah the fronts are going to be on the skinny side...th wheels are going to be a 15 x 5"...I would shoot a pic but my front wheels won't be in till August and I dont want to put the new rears thru any extra abuse in the mean time...the rears are 15x8" with 4.5 backspace...doing it again I would go with a 4.0" backspace

    Hotrock,
I used the tire sizes you said above ( which my son loves the look of your comet), getting ready to order them and it says it wont fit his vehicle?? Is this because yours in a 72 and his a 77??

I have BFG's and rune 205 70 14 on front and 235 70 15 on the back. Fills up the rear nicely.

    Mom,

I assume you must be ordering the tires on the internet with an automated selection system which will not recognize anything other than standard/stock tire and wheel fitment? The tire sizes I suggested will fit your son's Comet. There is no difference concerning tire and wheel size between the vehicle years.

Where you will find a problem is with the rear wheels. My wheel and tire combination fit nicely with just the right amount of space between the springs, frame, inner wheel sheet metal and fender lips with no rubbing. My rear steel wheels which are 15" X 8" wide with a 4.25" back spacing are a Chrysler application I purchased; including the mounted and balanced tires through Summit Racing. The selection of wheels with a 4.25" back spacing is limited. I can provide you the part number of the wheels if you are interested. If you do not like the look of the steel wheels, you may be able to use a wheel with a 4" back spacing but do not deviate any further.

There are a lot of options for a front wheel and tire combination using 225 70R 14s. My front wheels are old rusted 1960s Keystone mag's that my son murdered out. You can duplicate this combination easily.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

I have 14" tires all around on stock OE 500series wheels. My tire dealer had no problem getting them "that was 4 1/2yrs ago". Since then I ordered a new spare "last year", frm Tirerack.com. If your car has worn front springs there is a possibility of 225s rubbing fender wells. I originally had the tire shop order 205-70*14 for the front and when he put the car on the ground they immediately rubbed. I didn't have worn out springs; previous owner had removed coils material from practically new springs. I left the shop w/ 195-70's he happen to have in stock. They are presently on the car thou I have replaced front springs a few years ago. If you order tires online and mount & put them on car -- they will most likely not exchange them --- If ur going that route, make sure u know the exchange/return policy. Someone, in earlier post mentioned taking the car to local dealer and try some tires -- gud suggestion IMO.

I went with P235/60r14 if you can find them. These were my first replacement s. Now all new aluminum slot mags on 15 'rims. Front 215/70R15 and rears are P 275/R15s purchased from Summit Racing.

Mom....you really need to take your car to the tire store and figure out what will work. Going off what you read on the internet could lead to a lot of money spent for stuff that will not fit.
