Then came up with the idea of cutting tabs in the assembly and dropping them into slots I cut out in the spoiler. I wanted the spoiler 1 inch taller than stock so I left a 1 inch strip under the round stock. I used a spoiler I had with a big hole in the center just incase it didn't work out.

 

Next I folded the end tabs over and pop riveted them to the spoiler. For the center, I welded a plate in to cover the hole and help lock the extension in place. At this point the extension is very rigid.

 

I cleaned up all the areas where the spoiler touches the trunk lid and glued it down with 3M panel bond along with the stock hardware.

 

To get a uniform curve across the trunk lid I traced a french curve onto a piece of 14g a metal and cut it out. When I got the desired curve, I marked it and welded another piece on so I can hook it onto the 3/8 rod and drag it across the trunk.

 

This is the finished trunk lid and mounted with a stock spoiler end cap.

 

For the end caps I cut a slot and drilled a hole to blend in more 3/8 rod to match the trunk. The hole was 15/64" so that 1/4 rod would be real snug. Then took the rod and shaped it for the desired shape. I cut a shoulder in the rod where it disappears into the slot so the outer edge would blend in better with the curve on the end cap. Then I welded the rod to the post, flipped the end cap over, and filled the areas where the 3/8" rod and 1/4" post were protruding in the inside of the end cap with panel bond.

 

Once that all set up I cleaned and glued the end caps to the quarter panels. Then it was just a matter of shaping everything. I used fiberglass reinforced filled to cover the seam between the quarter panel and extension as well as the bulk of the filler to blend and shape everything. Regular filler was used as a top coat.

 

Finished and primed.

SPECTACULAR!!!!!! I saw all these pics on the Facebook group, really impressed. I think you will likely have better success than I will with the metal on metal bond, vs the metal on glass bond I have.

Great way of doing this, wish I had thought of this process myself. Would have saved me money, and likely been a better way of doing it.

 

Wow. Looks like a lot of work, but the end result looks great. Comet GTs should have had spoilers from the factory anyway.

Nice technique. I really like how you blended it into the trunk. So much better than the add-on feel of the stock spoiler.
