So, looking for headers for my 351w in my 1972 Maverick. I know Crites are a good fit, but I contacted them months ago, got a quote of $600 w/ shipping. This motor will be turbocharged within the next year, but need it up and running before I dig into that, and just want something cheap to work in the meantime. I've done a lot of searching on this forum, but a lot of the photos have been taken down, or are blocked by PhotoBucket. Along with that, most of them are 10+ years old, and some makers have shut down, and some have opened up with new products. Or people knew the brand of the headers, and not a part number. Seems like most of the problem, and modification needed, occurs with the driver's side header, due to steering. Hedman 88300, seems like a lot of modification is required, not worth the hassle. Haven't found any photos of what was required that weren't blocked. Hedman 88660 required clearancing of some tubes, and bending a 8" section to clear the pitman arm. Pictures would be nice. Now I've read on FaceBook that the Summit Brand SUM-G9031 headers fit very well with little bashing, but I have since lost the post, and there were no photos. Also heard that 7, 8 pipes need bashing, and 3 pipe needed reworked around steering. Simply put, I'm looking for a set of headers for my 351w that require the least amount of work, without costing an arm and a leg, as they will only be on the car temporarily. Looks like the SUM-G9031's, 88660's, or 6901's are my cheapest option, with a little fabrication. If anyone has any photos, brand and part numbers(if applicable), of headers they used on their 351w swapped Maverick/Comet, along with any modifications required, I would love for you to post them. I did not know those would fit! Would be suffocating the 393ci motor, but I might just do that for the time being. Thanks for the tip!
So I was at the junkyard pulling a couple of parts off of a 5.0 explorer for my 351w and the exhaust manifolds caught my eye. Now the tubes look very small, and maverick manifolds would probably be better, but they hug the block very tightly, and there's less room on that explorer than the maverick. So I was wondering, has anyone tried Explorer headers on a Maverick/Comet? Looks like they dump right behind the engine mount on the driver's side, probably be in the way of steering.
