It looks like a relay...........but not for the sport lites. I have never seen one plugged in to where you describe.

Yeah, I didn't pay attention to the year...I don't think 73's came with sportlamps...and the relay certainly wasn't mounted in the engine compartment.(I was posting my post at the same time the post about where it was located was being posted...if that makes sense:rolleyes: )
But that part does look exactly like the sportlamp relay that is in my '72. ;)

I pulled my relay out of its hiding place and it dosent look like the one you have. Does the car run without that part installed? Does the plug and wires look factory? If it does I'm guessing that yours might be part of the seat belt interlock system. If you have a meter it might help you figure out whats going on. 2 of the terminals will be the relay coil and the other 2 are the switch. The coil should measure some resistance, somewhere around 40 ohms. when you figure out which 2 terminals are the coil, jump 12 volts to them. you will hear the relay click. Then see if it heats up. If so, then the coils is going bad. If not, than the circuit it's switching is got a problem in it. You might try Charlie Pings websight to get some wiring diagrams. Here is a picture of the sport lamp relay.

1975 shouldn't have the starter interupt system....only a 1974 thing. I have one on the 74 LDO and I didn't see no relay like that.

Well, I found a wiring diagram for a 75 off of a link from Charlie's websight, and it shows a red wire with a light blue chaser going to a seat belt over ride relay. Only problem is I couldnt find any other mention of this relay in the diagram, so who knows. I guess your going to have to do some wire chasing to figure this one out. Too bad you dont live around here, I like solving problems like this.
