I run pertronixs because everything fits in cap, no xtra box and wiring on the fire wall, nice clean look...and it works. Jim
I replaced the points in my 250 with a pertronix I unit, and was amazed by the results. I used to replace/file the points regularly to get it to run smooth, but from the moment i put the pertronix in it has started and ran like a dream. Definitely worth it.
The duraspark box is ugly, There are a lot of wires, and having repaired fords for a living, the box fails more than you would think. It's a viable option, but those are the reasons I run Pertronix.
MSD would beat the petronix in my book But a duraspark is just a low dollar MSD basically As for being ugly... its a box, big deal. lol And for failing... I've only seen one fail before. The one on my 76 F-100 leaked all the crap out of it and still ran for years, I replaced it because i got tired of seeing the leakage, not because it didn't run good
Correct me if I am wrong here, but Pertronix only replaces the points. The DSII is a high energy system. Parts are available every place. If you are looking for a more powerful ignition system, then the Pertronix aint it. It is only a replacement for points. It will not improve the ignition like a DSII of MSD. I have a DSII sitting on the shelf, just been to lazy to install it. I did install a Pertronix in my son's Chebby and it sure ran smoother.
Pertronix II doesn't make a hotter spark the way a CD box will by amplifying the energy, but it does provide more coil saturation by increasing dwell time as rpm's increase. So at higher rpm's you will have a stronger spark than what points or the original Pertronix provides. If you're just using it to switch an MSD or HyFire electronic box there's no advantage to having a Pertronix II. A big plus with any electronic switching is increased accurracy, no points bounce, pitted contacts, or worn rubbing block. Set it correctly once and forget it. And if you're running nitrous it's recommended not to use points because of the inaccurate timing and chance for point bounce to drain the coil then not provide a hot enough spark. A points-type tach works fine with Pertronix, at least mine did.
