Pertronics is a good way to change to electronic.
If you want to run points you are going to need a Dwell Meter and a good set of wire thickness gauges. Set the points with a wire gauge to .017 to .021" gap when the points rubbing block is on the hump of the distributor cam lobe. Then it will start and run (you have to set timing after setting points because the points will affect timing).
With the dwell meter you want to set the points so the dwell measures 28 to 32 degrees and the closer you set iot to 28 degrees the better the performance will be. Remember that if you change the dwell or point gap you have to reset your timing too. A little (very litle) lube on the distributor cam, a couple of drops of oil on the wick under the rotor and a couple more drops of oil under the breaker plate to lube the advance weights. Set your plug gap as close as you can get to .028" and keep the idle smooth using Autolite plugs. Points don't work well above 4800 rpm unless you get the hi perf points sets and the heavy duty points start to bounce even sooner than the "normal" points. The high perf points are usually good to about 6500 RPM. Match the points with what your engine needs - the High Perf points are expensive.

Factory 74 2dr 250 auto gets all time average of 16.7.
The last 4000miles(moderately short trips) got an average of 15.4
Highs of 20.5 and 23.8 (all highway 60+mph)
    Lows of 11.8 and 12.0

New to Ford? Just go to the salvage and get a factory(duraspark) distributor from a 302.

Why would you care? Plan on swapping out your built 302 for a stock 200? That would probably be the first on this forum...

Just get a Duraspark distributor from a late 70's 302. It will literally plug right in in place of the 6 cylinder distributor. I personally have tried the Pertronix twice, both of them burned up within 10,000 miles. The last time I had to walk 3 miles, never again... "Fool me once..."

Can't see why anyone would prefer points over electronic ignition on the street. My car had more power and better gas mileage when I went from points to electronic. Runs a hell of alot smoother, too with a hell of alot less maintenance.

Sounds like something else in your car was not correct or compatable with the Pertronix. I can see one failing on it's own but not two.

Don't know what could have been wrong. They were on a switched 12 volts source with an MSD Blaster coil. I won't use one again regardless.

It would have to be early 80s before roller cams came into use, 85(?) and later had steel gears that would tear up your cam.

will the 76 electronic distributor work on my 71? and what all differences will it have compared to points? what other things are there to do to get better gas mileage on a stock 200?

My 200 I6 with power steering and A/C got 24mpg when I brought it home from Florida to Maryland and after getting it home normal driving back and forth to work every day it get right around 20mpg with the A/C blowing and P/S, without the A/C blowing it does get a little better but not much. The 302 that is in the latest Maverick I bought is getting around 17mpg. So I have been driving it back and forth to work more than the I6. 17mpg and I get V8 power and get to bang gears along the way or 20mpg and I get to relax and listen to the stereo. Man life is good. I got a Maverick for all occasions. I can swap back and forth when ever I want and enjoy the drive either way.

Now on the other hand it is snowing out there right now so after I drive home tonight (in the V8 Maverick) I will be parking both Mavericks for a few days and driving my truck because Maryland salts the hell out of the roads and I don't need salt up under either one of my Mavericks to rot them out.
