Holley is externally adjusted at the top of the bowl at the fuel inlet . Edelbrock in internally adjusted by bending the tabs on the float. Both dry float and float drop needs to be adjusted
ok, it is running better, but now it will not "Idle down" when I put it in park or sit a stop light, do i have it out of adjustment still? I fi manually release the accellerator cable it will idele down fine. Thoughts?
What kind of carb do you have??? Carter single barrel or a holly 2 barrel??? By manually releasing the cable do you mean pulling off the carb linkage or just pulling it to closed throttle position???
Sorry, it is a carter 1 barrel and I meant i am pulling the throttle to the closed position. I cleaned it really well and made a few adjustments and it seems to be working now. This car has not been running for 33 years so I am sure I will run into a few issues.
You may want to put a return spring on the linkage if its gone/weak...stuck throttles are not fun...especially in rush hour traffic.
thanks, i am going to check it out. . i drove it to work today it ia bout a 45 mile commute, car ran great but it will not idle down and it is sucking gas.
Is your choke working properly??? It will cause your high idle and poor fuel economy as well if its sticking shut.
I guess that could be it, when I stop I have to go under the hood and manually disengage it to idle down. Is there a way for me to test it? Is it a seperate component that I can replace? or do I have to but the entire carburetor?
If the choke stays shut, there's a doomaflatchie driven by a lever coming from the choke that keeps the idle up. Look on the drivers side of the carb and open and close the choke and push and pull the throttle linkage and you can see how the whole thing works. On the back of the carb is a little black doomaflatchie w/ three screws. Take those three screws off and take that black cover off *take note of how everything comes off, and dont drop anything*. The choke is controlled by a heat sensitive coil under that black housing. Once you get a good look at it, you shoud be able to see how it works. With that car cold, adjust it so that the choke is just barely shut all the way.
Oh, and if that doesn't fix it, which I suspect it wont (but the choke sitll needs adjustment - no way its still correct after so many years), clean all the throttle linkages real well, and spray some lubricant around.
