I did a search and I see Mustang lower qtr panel patches don't work (dang it they're cheap too) and I see why after looking at my 68 Mustang. My car has rust in the lower wheelwell area behind the tires....not a big area but both layers. I'm not buying $175.00 quarter skins just to get the very bottom of the panel. Has anybody found any other panels that would work? I don't mind some fab and welding but I don't have a break and a shrinker so I don't see me making the patch panels, but I may have to. I have used pieces of a frt fender to patch a Fairlane qtr before. Any thoughts? I work at a shop so I've even been eyeballing the lower portions of some new stuff trying to find the right shape. btw...my low miles 70 Maverick 2 door has been stored and covered up outside for 10 years. Judgement day is this Sunday. I'm going to uncover it and survey it (I can see the qtrs under the cover and that's about all I know so far other than the Grabber hood rust) and see if I can get it to start. I plan on doing a thread about it and follow through out the semi-restoration process and some upgrades. It will not be I show car...but I am a forum junkie and love posting stuff.....especially pics. I'm sure the hood and the qtrs are just the tip of the iceberg. This should be fun! Here's my intro here about my car http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=65440 Plans for the car....satin black and very low. Skinny and wide Torq Thrusts. Very smooth...no emblems, rt mirror, frt license plate brkt or gas cap. 5.0 roller motor but with a 4 barrel. C4 or AOD. 4 wheel disc and general susp. rebuild. I already have most of the stuff from another project I sold so it shouldn't kill my wallet.
Sounds like you have a well thought out plan. Should look nice! I live near Mustangs Unlimited in CT. Because of that conveniance I stopped and bought the lower patch kit for a 65-66 Mustang. I just got one side figuring it was worth the $50 to try it and see if I could get it to work and maybe be able to pass along some good info. The kit comes with the inner drop off, the outer wheel house patch and the lower quarter patch. I mocked up the quarter patch, and while different, I think I can get it to work. The biggest thing I see is the Mav. wheel opening goes almost verticle right from the bottom, where the Mustang goes up on more of an angle. But I think a pie cut will possibly take care of that. The rest looks doable, with some finess. I don't really want to buy quarters just for a lower patch either, but I will if I can't get this to work right. Glenn
I remember a member some time ago that used 67-68 stang lower quarters. It looked great when they were done. The rear of the panel was a little different IIRC but most people wont notice that anyway. If its not going to be a 100 point show car restoration I wouldnt worry about it and just go with the stang patches.
I was even thinking the 69-70 panels may be a little closer to the right general shape. I'll have to look at them a little more. I'm looking to get something that already has the rounded and inner lip area at the frt of panel. I don't mind some reshaping but I think that area would be hard to fabricate to look correct with the limited equipment that I have...but I think I can do it if I have to.
