They used to say stuff made in Japan was cheap junk and now it's China. There are many products made in china that we use every day that are perfectly acceptable. I've been using MSD stuff with no problems for years. I had a set of 210cc Procomp heads on a 306 that I ran for a year or so, I then put the old school ported D20E stock castings back on it and picked up 2 tenths. Although even with the added weight I think they performed better due increased velocity and the whole package. I now run a set of TrickFlow Highports that are amazing What do the Procomps 230's flow at .600 for a 420cu I would want no less then 300cfm @ .600 on the intake. You might want to ask these same questions at sbftech.com lots of good info there.
check with brodix they have some good ford heads now im looking at a set of 195 spec heads and my machine shop said they could finish the bare casting for me all total assembled without rockers 1200 to 1300 so you might want to check them out. john
I lived in china for 2 years, speak and write chinese and can say that china has always made cheap junk parts. I have been to many chinese foundries and Its all about mass production and profit with little or no quality control. Im not saying not to buy chinese stuff, all Im saying is that in a 420cubic inch motor that Im assuming is going to be producing over 500hp you have much better options. The issue is not really even that the heads are made in china, its the type of aluminum they are using with those heads and lack of quality control. You cant compare Iron rods and iron cranks made in china with aluminum made in china, iron is one of the cheapest metals where as aluminum is expensive with many different grades. You also cant compare edlebrock heads even if they were made in china, its a completely different type of aluminum than the aluminum procomp is using! For what its worth Japan hasent made a lot of stuff in japan for the last 20 years, 75% of japanese stuff is made in or around malayasia now. Even if a product says made in japan it may not be, the japanese use the first letter in their serial numbers to tell which country they had it made in.
I've had the 420 c.i. for several years now,but it's only got about 800- 900 miles on it. It's in my '75 right now. I currently have '70 model DOOE heads on it that have been ported some. Ferrea stainless 1.94 & 1.50 valves. They work good for what they are, but just are'nt suited for the engine that they are on. I'd love to put the DOOE's on my '73 with 302. Thanks for your post.
my brother picked up a set of bbf procomp heads from that same seller,i plan opicking up a set of the asembled 210cc heads hes selling for 650 a set,my broters are pretty nice the runners arent very smooth but we fixed that in a couple hours with a dremal.
skipwhite and abad71camaro sell the 210cc heads for $579.oo shipped, in their ebay stores. Just thought I would let you know, so you could save $70.oo:Handshake

One more thing, when you say, you've been runnig the MSD stuff for years wiyh no problem, are you talking about the procomp MSD style stuff?
The name of the company is Procomp Electronics. When I want performance parts for my American engine I always go to a Chinese electronics manufacturer...
Ok here's the bottomline from my experience with procomp. If your buying get bare CnC heads. Its just simple as that. I bought assembled procomps for cheap and they needed tons of work. The springs were wrong, the valves wrong, seriously they had a 2.05 valve in a 2.02 seat. The casting was horrible, took a lot of porting to clean it up. With CnC work done most of the flaws are cleared up and make for great head. Install beehive springs with ferra valves and rev to 7k+ all day. Just a word of caution the CNC procomps have large runners due to the CNC process. I would have had the CNC work done but I wanted to keep my 190 runner. They offering me an awesome price to upgrade to cnc with bigger valves but I passed.

I always look at the cheap heads like this................... Are you willing to have a cheap head drop a valve on your brand new short block you spent 2500 or more putting together and take out your short block and your "bargain" heads? I would throw a cheap set of heads on a cheap short block, anything built gets topped off with the right parts.
