The later tank will work but you need the straps for the tank you install.
There will be a bit of interference between the tank and rear splash shield.

Not necessarily, the straps will work fine, my 73 had the 73 straps holding a 76 tank, you just need longer bolts (The straps will conform to the tanks). The tanks do not hit the rear valance, that's a common misconception. I've done it twice with no issues. :Handshake

Yup 76 mav tank and longer bolts work... I put a 69 mustang tank in my 71 but you have to move the straps and make a new slot on the right side for the bolt... IM going to put the 76 mav/comet tank in my 72 comet gt, less mods needed....

Yup. Straps work fine - just need longer bolts from a hardware store. Idk about the splash guard... still looking for mine :hmmm: lol

Check out autokrafters.com.. They have one that fits but is 19 gallons, and all the straps and other parts needed to do the conversion to a larger tank. Might be a bit on the spendy route but it will be done right.

That's the 75-76 style tank we've been talking about.

Don't buy it from Autokrafters. You'll get a much better deal from rock auto.(just look up a tank for a 76 Mav.) the 76-77 tank fit my 72 just fine. Its mostly just deeper. You will either have to buy the vapor valve for the 76-77 tank or get one out of the junk yard. I bought the straps to go with the tank. You will still use your old sending unit.

Do you know of any place online that sells the '76 Vapor Valve?

I've found it at AutoKrafters, CJpony parts, National Parts depot, and places like that. Its about $40 plus the grommit. I had a custom one made for my tank by a friend of mine who is a tool and die maker. You will have to look around to get the best deal.

Ok Thanks guys. I just ordered the tank and the vapor valve. Is there anything else that I might need?
