i dont really want to put anything over it, to take away the appearance. will something like that stuff you put in a gas tang work to seal it?

first find out how bad it is...then you will have options from there...:yup:
some put on covers...myself i repaired the rust then...sealed up vents...some cut holes in the side and repair through that... some remove the complete top...some remove the...top and bottom...some repair from underneth the dash..
I repaired one by removing all the leaves and pine straw from the cowl area...it was so thick it was wicking water over the hats...:yup:

that doesn't mean your cowl leaks...have someone pour water...just in the cowl vents...getting none on the windshield...pour it slow and on both sides...you look under dash for any water...:yup:
    get back with us afterwards...:Handshake

Your car was recently painted wasn't it?
This should have been repaired before hand as to not damage the paint job/work...but

-You could find covers like Coolvettes said. This would save cutting, welding, etc.

    - You can take a cutoff wheel and just cut the vents and weld a solid piece over top... and have that section repainted.

-The normal way is to remove your front windshield , drill the spot welds and remove the cowl, Find the leak and repair, and epoxy the cowl back on or weld the cowl back on.
(You can pull this method off without having to repaint if your good)

-Or you can remove the dash (entirely), and you may be able to do the repair via the inside if its not bad.
    (saving outside from any damage)

putting covers over the vents...will not stop water from leaking inside..

there are weep holes at the base of the windshield and openings around the wiper arms...:yup:
I went through the vents to treat my cowl pan...there were no holes or leaks...just fixing it before it did...(y)
