if the pits aren't be too deep, I would (after removing the rust) prime it then fill the pitted areas with "glaze" then sand smooth. Thin layers...

Looks and sounds great! I'm thinking about using the 3M panel bond stuff to mount my valence. It may be a little easier to remove if it ever gets...
